Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd pop in to say hello, as I've accidentally agreed to buy a Rover 820 Sterling. I think it's probably well known around these parts, possibly notorious!
Anyway I'm a serial offender when it comes to old cars, but they are usually Fiat shaped. This will be my first owned Rover, so apologies in advance for the silly questions.
I hesitate to plunge straight in with a question (sorry), but I need to get the header tank fixed before it can come home with me. You're probably not surprised at this..... I understand from another thread that a Volvo 850 tank is the best bet, but I've got a bit confused cross referencing Volvo parts to a Rover I haven't seen! Could anyone confirm it's the tank pictured below please, and that the Rover cap fits on (I believe a Volvo cap is 22psi, but the Rover needs 14/16psi)? Any help gratefully received.

Thats the tank, you do have to extend the lower hose though and if memory serves its a bigger bore too. Also you need a bracket to fit it to the inner flitch on the 800, its not just plug and play so to speak.

Hopefully it will be sorted & with me in a couple of weeks. Then the other bits will need doing, but one thing at a time!

It's probably easier to source a volvo expansion bottle from a breaker, you can then cut of the mounting bracket for modification and some of the volvo pipework which has some useful bends in it to aid fitting.

Welcome aboard Palio. Re the expansion tank, what Tom said is probably the best course of action, if you decide to buy the new one (pattern ones are only £20 from partsforvolvosonline) then you'll need some 19mm bore heater hose, a 19 x 16mm reducer and also (if memory serves without measuring mine) some 10mm bore heater hose and a 10mm straight joiner for the overflow pipe.
If the scrapyard you get it from is friendly enough, you may be able to hacksaw the Volvo bracket off the donor vehicle (it's wekded to the inner wing so unlikely to be of any real value to them) then make a bracket to hold the Volvo bracket. That reminds me - i should really make a bracket for mine, it's only been in there 7 years without one!

Couldn't easily find a scrapper round here, so it's likely to be the new route!
Interesting that it stays 7 years without a bracket - that could prove extremely useful info!!
So I might need to gather some hoses by the sound of it. Are you fairly sure about the dimensions Dave? I have a good hose place near here, and might be wise to get some before I trek off up North.
I'm looking forward to getting the car - thanks for the comments. It's going to need work, but hopefully it's a known quantity......

I'll double check the hose sizes tomorrow Palio and post them up. In fairness the one i have that has sat there for 7 years was out of a 740 so a slightly different shape and has a 19mm reinforced PVC hose under it for the feed which gives it a lot of support. Also because it's sitting further forward (and a different shape) i didn't have to extend the overflow :
I have a (dead ) 800 expansion tank and two (live ) 940/960/850/S/V40 tanks so i can check the hose sizes quite easily. The Rover cap is a straight fit but you'll probably find the Volvo cap is 16psi (1.1 bar) or very close to it. Never actually heard of a cooling system running at 22psi but i suppose it's possible.
Might sound like an odd question but do you know when the antifreeze was last changed in it? If the previous owner kept topping up with plain water it's probably diluted by now. In theory coming into summer (allegedly!) you won't need antifreeze BUT being an all-alloy engine, it needs the corrosion inhibitors in antifreeze. As such it may be a good time to remove the thermostat, reverse flush the entire system, refit the 'stat and renew the antifreeze when you fit the Volvo tank. I normally use something like Radflush, Comma X-Stream cooling system flush or similar then reverse flush it (stuff a running garden hose into the rad end of the top hose, make sure the heater controls are set to hot before switching the engine off before draining the system and flushing/refilling) and it's amazing how much gunge comes out, even with a relatively clean system!

A note to muddy the water on the hose sizes. I believe the 850 and early V70 tanks have different outlet positions and sizes. I know that many on here have used 850 tanks and have needed to use adapters to connect to the 800 system. When I did mine I was lucky to have a '98 V70 that I was scrapping so I used the tank and brackets from it. I found that the outlet size was correct for the 800 system, but a short extension was needed. I used a piece of pipe from the Volvo with a bend in it to aid pipe routing. My vent hose was long enough to reach without modification.
Rather than get a kit of parts now. I would wait until you have the tank in hand to see what fittings, if any, you need.

As promised, i've measured the hose stubs on the tanks.
Car Outlet Overflow
Rover 5/8" 15.9mm 3/8" 9.5mm
Volvo 13/16" 20.5mm 11/32" 8.7mm
The outlet hose on the Volvo is 3/4" or 19mm so has to stretch a little to fit and the overflow hose is 8mm so again has to stretch. These measurements were taken from the same sort of tank as you originally linked to above so you'll need some 3/4" or 19mm bore hose, a 19 x 16mm reducer and Jubilee clips for the outlet and an 8 x 10mm reducer, some 8mm hose and Jubilee clips for the overflow/vent.
The tank i took the measurements from was from a 5-cylinder S40 and the Volvo part number is 9141031

Just wanted to thank you again for the info. Got all the hoses & reducers above, and it all went together perfectly today! It was a huge help.
