Welcome
A fine choice of motor. Good colour, too. This is the right place to be as I've had lots of advice since I signed up in December after snapping up my 827 Sterling from eBay.
I wrote to the previous owner for a bit of history and received a really good letter in reply from him. Now well into his 80s he misses the old girl but has replaced her with a hot hatch!
I agree that these gems are overlooked. Long may it continue as we can take advantage of this.
Hope to see you at a future event.

Welcome Tom!! Nice to see someone your age appreciating the finer things in life like 800s in general and the fun you can have with the Saxo/106/Corsa brigade!! In a previous car (not an 800 but almost as quick) i had a Saxo VTS err, "challenge" me on the motorway once I cruised up to about 90-95mph (Kate - cover your eyes!! lol!!) and waited for him to thrash the nuts off the engine to pull alongside - then i kicked it down and left him lol!!
The beauty about the image "problem" as you call it is it instantly turns your car into a sleeper. So many people think that 800s have no poke then you leave them in a cloud of exhaust fumes and you just know they're thinking they've wasted however much they've spent on their gutless euro-boxes!!
Mines an 827 auto but still comfortably hits 60 in about 8 seconds, 80+ in about 13 seconds and i've not had it flat out yet but have seen *4*mph on the speedo with it still accelerating. Being electronic the speedo is actually very accurate - i had a Motor or Car mag some time ago where they tested a new 800 (think it was your model) and they checked the speedo for accuracy. It was 100% accurate to 130mph and beyond.
As for your insurance, try this mob : http://www.lancasterinsurance.co.uk/
I've just insured mine on a 6,000 mile, agreed value policy, fully comp for £199.90. OK so i'm a little older than you but as it appears they now recognise the 800 as having classic status, you could get a nice price!! Hopefully beat that £1350 a year premium!!
You're most definitely in the best place for all things 800 - the collective knowledge on the site is second to none!! Oh yeah, we're a friendly bunch too!!

Yours must be a one off. I've not had an 800 with an accurate speedo yet, they usually read 10% over in my experience.

I know the Mk1 Sterling was fairly accurate because i double checked things like the average speed etc against the trip computer and double checked distances etc against things like AA route planner etc to give me the ebst chance of being accurate.
I know many cars are quite a way out. Last vehicle i used my sat-nav to check the speedo was my P reg Astra van. That did read 10% fast - at an indicated 100mph it was travelling at 91mph so reckon my Sterling is pretty damn close!
