1997 Sterling - New to Forum

Hi, Although I registered on the site sometime ago, this is the first opportunity that I have had to actually post anything at all. I bought the old girl back in May 2009 from a dealer based in Bury, Greater Manchester. I found her on Auto Trader and although I left my home town of Manchester way back in 1986, it seemed destined that I should buy this car from a place I knew well. I have had two previous 820 manual Fastbacks years ago (when they were still in production) and always liked the cars. However, I did remember the persistent oil leaks from the top right of the T series engine. She is a 1997 Sterling auto and only had 40 thousand on the clock with two owners. Lulled into a false sense of security I bought her for Four Hundred Pounds and a trade in for a Skoda !!!. Anyway, without going on too much, I noticed a dramatic loss of coolant about six months after my purchase. I've spent an absolute fortune on her with heads skimmed, new thermostat, new temperature sensor, new timing belts, exhausts, and small paint jobs on the bumpers. I have recntly changed the 15 inch wheels to 17 inch types which I managed to scuff only days after having them referbed. I will attach some photos...once I work out how to do it !!!

Welcome to the site.

A few of us have been through that with later 825s. When I had my first one back in 2001 I'd paid more than 10 times what you did. :lol:

Hopefully it'll look after you now you've looked after it.

Just to note it's a Sterling, not a Stirling, many anoraks will be having fits of rage if you keep calling it a Stirling :wink:

My anorak has been in hibernation for a year now, although i did resort to a sweater one day in January.

Welcome Mark! Anorak donned and firmly zipped up - it's Sterling!!!! :evil: :lol:

Joking aside, it's amazing how many people spell it wrong! You'd think that as the currency of the nation is Pounds Sterling more people would get it right and if memory serves, i think Stirling is a place in Scotland or possibly a football team up there.

It's both.

This is a Stirling - built by Short Brothers during WW2. Ironically, some were built in the Austin Factory at Cofton Hackett, near Longbridge!

Oh dear....off to a good start then !!!. I've edited my original posting to reflect the correct spelling of STERLING but thought I'd better add this short post otherwise it would make the subsequent replies nonsensical. Many thanks for the corrections though. I'm now off to update another site regarding my ASTUN METROW. :lol:
