The Old Bugger Has Entered The Building
Alright, where do I start?
I was born when Winston Churchill was prime minister, the Queen became... Well, the Queen. And was driven home from the hospital in a Pre-War made car which was still pretty new at the time,
Yes, I AM VERY OLD.
But at least I still have my mind.
OK, so where do I start ?
I was born when Winston Churchill was prime minister the Queen became the Qheen and I was driven home in a...
No wait, I've already said that haven't I?
I suppose I'd better explain why I am on a Rover 800 forum, in case you hadn't already guessed.
My wife owns a 1991 (J-Reg) Rover 827 SLi manual.
She bought it last year as a stop-gap while waiting for new brand new Ford KA to come into the dealership and when it did, she put the 827 in the garage and drove the KA.
But, a couple of months later she decided the KA wasn't big enough nor powerful enough so sold it and went back to driving the 827 permanently.
I couldn't really complain too much because I'm a fan of the oldies myself, I drive a 1994 Peugeot 405 GLX 1.9 IDI Turbo Diesel which I bought brand new in summer '94 and have put over 300K on the clock (original engine and transmission!).
It still gets me from A to B with excellent fuel efficiency (I'm a traditional Scottish cheapo) and if I step on it the turbo gives that big old XUD engine a kick up the arse to get it going at some speed.
Now I'm retired and don't drive near as much as I did before I start thinking perhaps I should buy myself a more luxurious car and was close to signing on the dotted line for a nice Benz at the start of this year but I just couldn't do it.
The money wasn't a problem, as I've been lucky enough to have success in my businesses which are still running but not with me at the helm anymore, but I just could not justify spending give or take £40,000 on something which would give me less fuel efficiency, have a silly push button start, a built in nav-sat thing which I wouldn't be able to even turn on, and heating that I'd need to get the manual out every time I wanted to turn the fan on.
So walked out of the dealership, fired up the old Pug and drove home thanking myself for coming to my senses.
I'm not saying I don't like modern cars, my daughter and her husband both have 2012 vehicles and they are good cars but I just wouldn't like to live with one every day.
Where am I again? I've gotten so sidetracked I can't even remember where I started, hold on while I scroll up and check.
Oh yes, Rover 800.
The only thing left to tell you is what colour pants I'm wearing, and I won't be doing that...
...Because I'm not wearing any.

Jim
Hope you find your pants.
I agree about modern cars. Too complex and unnecessarily so. But so are radios, TVs and even the machine in Tesco's cafe that serves you tea and coffee.
I wish it was 1960 again. Bakelite steering wheels, no radio, no ABS, 25mph crash into a fence and you were dead. Those were the days.

Re: The Old Bugger Has Entered The Building
They sure were Brad.
Well no Kate, I'll be driving my 405 which doesn't have the luxuriousness of the 827 SLi and the only wood in it is a green magic tree to cover up the smell of Marlboro Reds!!

Re: The Old Bugger Has Entered The Building
Welcome old fella. I'm not so old as you, I drive an Mk1 820 turbo and I can remember being carried in my Dad's Morris Minor in 1964 and when I was 5. It was green (a matt colour I think or maybe it could have done with a bit of polish) and a dash switch for the indicator flag thingies. It also had copious numbers of bluebottles in residence as a consequence of a pot of fishing magggots being spilled in the boot. My 800 has no such problems, what I'll do when I can't get another (if the current one ever expires, I hope not) I don't know.
Anyway, after sidetracking nicely, welcome again.
PS I always* wear pants.
