Folks
On my '93 coupé the aircon compressor makes a hell of a noise when engaged, it does work fine and deliver quite cold air (very cold actually) but due to prolonged periods of non-use by the previous owners it has developped this grinding noise. A bit worried that it might fail at one point and grip to the point it would cause the belt to snap and cause damage elsewhere (pulley damper?).
Anyway, if one of you has a new original compressor (or known working one removed from another car), I simply don't trust the so-called refurbished parts that one might get from vendors such as Hella, Da Silva, etc...

Re: Wanted : 827 aircon compressor
I wouldn't worry either. Mine's been making the same noise for 18 months since I bought it. A re-gas and oil fill helped, but not much.
I'm treating it as a "fix upon failure" rather than going for pre-emptive replacement.

Re: Wanted : 827 aircon compressor
Well thanks for the feedback everyone. Two mentioned that I worry too much, one that I should replace it immediately...well I guess I'll just try and find an OEM one at a reasonable price at some point, and stop worrying in the mean time

From the way you describe it, i would say the clutch bearings are noisy. Compressors are available but don't usually come with clutches so you would have to transfer your old one which would of course transfer the noise as well.
You'll need a special tool for transferring the clutch assembly :
http://www.kmsdirect.co.uk/magento/cata ... T&x=9&y=10
You may be able to find another clutch assembly from Rimmers or perhaps an A/C specialist or you could strip it down and source the bearings separately from a bearings supplier :
http://www.bearingshopuk.co.uk/
I've used these people before although i've not done my noisy compressor clutch bearings yet. Mine are that noisy people 1/2 mile up the road reported they heard me pull away from a set of traffic lights! If i can find the relvant information for removing the clutch (you won't need to remove the compressor if you're crafty) i'll post it up here.
