Front Bonnet Grille
Hello saviours,
Like others my bonnet grille has suddenly started to rapidly go rusty and is upsetting me greatly.
Would anyone have an unbroken, unrusty spare grille to fit a 1995 MkIIA saloon that they would like to sell to me?
Many thanks in hope
Eric

Re: Front Bonnet Grille
Original non rusty ones will be rare these days.
Incase you weren't aware later cars had plastic grilles so obviously won't rust.
They need to be swapped complete with the fins. The only negative is the fins aren't black but could be easily painted.
Unless you really want a metal one it might be a better route for you. Should at least increase your chances of finding one anyway.

Re: Front Bonnet Grille
The later plastic one is the way to go - i thought i had a spare one and provisionally offered it to someone only to find it was metal - or at least it was once! More a case of sweep it up than pick it up now!
I know of a 95 820i that's going to be broken in the near future and i think it has a plastic grille on it, i'll check with the owner.
Meanwhile to make life easier when you do find one, start soaking the bolts/nuts etc that secure the existing grille assembly to the bonnet with WD40 and give them periodic soakings with more. If you can get a fine-bristled wire brush onto the threads of them as well that would also help.

Thanks for the replies.
Fingers crossed. I would accept the wrong colour fins for a plastic unrusted version

Re: Front Bonnet Grille
I have a spare grill that I would be happy to part with Eric. It will be the plastic type because as others have already said the metal ones do rust and are very rare to find a good one. I will check in the garage for your tomorrow and will PM you the details. I may well have a black grille to go with it.

Re: Front Bonnet Grille
I'm pretty sure you can remove the grille from the chrome surround and paint it satin black.
I did mine, because I did mine because the silver grille had turned beige.

Re: Front Bonnet Grille
I have a couple of them fitted on my cars and one is a pale grey (almost but not quite silver) and the other is off-white/beige/cream/magnolia/whatever else you care to call the natural colour of the polymer (think it's ABS but not sure) that they're made from.
My guess is the natural colour is indeed off-white/opaque and then they are sprayed light grey with a matt black border that still seems to be intact on both. Perhaps the matt black was sprayed on by previous owners and has survived simply because it's out of reach of sunlight, automatic car wash brushes etc.
Perhaps someone such as either Dave (Dollysprint) or Steve (Rovercoup) could shed some light on how these grilles left the factory?
