MK1 827 washer motor

Post by Dajazar » Wed Nov 02, 2016 6:46 pm

Hi all
Does anyone have a windscreen washer motor for my MK1 sterling?
Apparently, the part is specific to the 827 and I need one. Can't find one anywherelse.

Can anyone help or point in the right direction

Thank you
Tracy

I'll have a look but before i do, has yours got headlamp washers on it? Something in the back of my mind says the headlamp washers shared the same pump as the screen wash with most of the pressure being used on the headlamps - could be wrong though!

You could also try the following sellers on ebay :

Mogtymus - has a lot of second hand 800 stuff, mainly Mk1 and some early Mk2
xjrover - has a lot of NOS stuff for various 800s and Jags.

I've bought from both in the past with no trouble at all so if they do there's a good chance it will work without a problem.
Cheers,
Dave

I honestly can't remember how they're setup on a MK1 Sterling, assuming it's the same pump for headlights and screen as Dave says then are you sure the pump's the problem?

If it is two separate pumps, as a bodge could you swap the pipe over so at least you have water on the screen?

A photo would help Tracy!

Chris, i never had any trouble with mine so never knew how they went together, only seen an SLi and a Vitesse since, neither of which had headlamp washers. All i remember is when i operated the washers on my Mk1 Sterling, the headlamp washers always worked (headlamps on or off) which could have been a bodge on someone elses part before i owned it. The Haynes Book of Fantasy isn't helpful either and i can't find it on Super CD, maybe looking in the wrong place.

Fairly certain on the other Mk1 models the screen wash pump was the same as the later ones but if the Sterling is different then that doesn't help.

*** EDIT *** Just had another read, my theory is wrong then if the headlamp washers work.

Can you hear the screen wash pump running or is it completely dead? :?
Cheers,
Dave

I thought that the mk1 had a separate high pressure pump for the headlights and the mk2 never had washers

Yeah headlamp washers are separate pump, its much bigger.
Tracy do you have the pump out?
Just recommissioned my 820 Coupe and had the same problem, took it out and put 12volts too it and it burst into life, it was just jammed after being laid up for 3 years. You wouldn't believe the smell of the old washer fluid though! Worth a try unless you have already done it of course.

I was going to suggest what Dave just said but also clean the terminals on the pump motor.
Cheers,
Dave

If it doesn't run or is reluctant, turn it upside down so the big inlet is at the top and spray some WD40 in it and then you should also be able to see the pump impeller and be able to flick the blades round with a small screwdriver or similar. With luck and perseverance you may well be able to revive it that way. Keep trying it with the 12V in between flicking the impeller as sometimes it doesn't take much. :D

Just as a thought, was there a spare washer pump with the car when I sold it to you? I did have one at one point but can't quite remember its fate

Check these out on ebay to see if any are what you're after Tracy :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-800-Var ... SwP~tW1wTY

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-800-198 ... Sw9N1Vz7RL

Not sure how the seller of the 3rd one justifies a higher price for a used one than the others want for a new one but there you go! Hopefully one or other of those is right, if not this is the search i did :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from= ... p&_sacat=0

Even found a Mk1 headlamp wash pump on there - i can see an upgrade happening on a Mk2 coming up!  :D

Dave
