Mk1 Scuttle Panel Wanted

Post by guru » Mon Jul 10, 2017 8:05 pm

As part of the restoration of the mighty Sterling I'm going to need a new scuttle panel, does anyone have one in a half decent condition?

The Mk1 scuttle has stalks under the windscreen which act as a stop for the wipers when parked off screen.

I have a Mk1 scuttle on my Mk2 (I had a brand new panel). This does not matter because the Mk2 wipers stay on screen when parked and the stalks are not visible behind/under the line of the bonnet edge.

If a Mk2 scuttle (without the stalks) was fitted to a Mk1 car I would worry about what happens when wipers snap down to the off screen parked position (they do it with some force).

I suppose you could disable the off screen parking (as you can on a Mk1) but they look a bit untidy poking up at an angle over the bottom of the screen. Think of how they look between sweeps with intermittent selected. Not to mention risk if off screen wiper parking is inadvertently re-enabled.

I thought the mk1 with bump stops was also deeper..
ie. comes further up the windscreen

You're spot on Dean - the idea is the wipers park in the same place but on the Mk1 rest against the stops. In theory i suppose you could fit a Mk2 scuttle to a Mk1 and double check the park position of the wipers bearing in mind they will in fact be on the screen now because that portion of the scuttle complete with stops is missing from the Mk2 version. :D

I've used MK2 panels on MK1s but not the other way round.

One thing to consider is the line on the windscreen left by the taller panel.

I think Chris has answered that one! :D

The line on the windscreen would probably wash/polish off, if it was a real problem then in a few months with an MoT on the car an "accident" might happen necessitating a replacement windscreen. :D

Awesome, I'd obviously prefer to get a Mk1 panel for originality but it's good to know I should be able to get a Mk2 one to fit if needed.

Cool, sounds like you'd be OK then, James.

I've used a Mk1 panel on a Mk2, and Chris has used a Mk2 panel on a Mk1, so seems like they're switchable (windscreen polishing aside)

For originailty and "how it looks", if a Mk1 part (with stalks/bumps) can look OK on a Mk2 then you should be fine.
