Beige cloth post '96 Driver's seat

Post by Roadwork » Thu Aug 02, 2018 9:11 pm

Hi chaps.

Was absolutely heartbroken to find that my otherwise perfect driver's seat has developed an upholstery split between the driver's seat bolter and the backrest. I assume it's a case of "they all do that, Sir", but perhaps a few have escaped this fate.

If anybody' breaking an 800 saloon or fastback with a beige cloth interior (blue piping), whatever you do, don't throw the front seats away! Reward waiting. Perhaps even cash.

Thank you!

You'll be lucky Chris! If you'd asked a few months ago, i had a whole set you could have had for the princely sum of "thank you", they had either beige or red piping though and needed a good clean.

If you are lucky enough to be offered another front seat or the cover from one, try and get the passenger side. The back rest covers are the same (or at least i'm 99% sure they are) but the passenger seat gets less wear than the drivers seat so will be in better condition. In fact, if your seats are manual and not heated, just swap the entire passenger seat onto your drivers seat base (4 bolts, Torx 45 if memory serves), job done!

Alternatively you can swap the covers over, it's not a hard job (except for one bit) but it is fiddly and time consuming. If it comes to that i can talk you through it with photos.

Then there's the leather option. Found these on fleabay :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-800-Mk ... 2820414959

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-800-Fa ... 2629210960

First option is Mk2a and £70 for the set, second option is Mk2b and £250 for the set!

If yours are electric then the easiest would be the Mk2b seats as they should simply plug'n'play. If not, run a feed into the seats on the Mk2a seats and you have the powered movement - if you want the heaters to work that's a different upgrade but i can help with that as well.

No, i haven't gone blind and not noticed they're grey! Two options - first is fit as they are and enjoy the contrast, grey and blue can work as well as beige and blue. Alternatively it'll cost you about £30-40 for some leather dye, prep solution and sealant plus several hours of elbow grease, some "foam brushes" (couple of quid on fleabay) for the leather "paint" and the use of a hairdryer to dry the solutions out between coats.

There's a few options/ideas there, don't forget by the time the Mk2b came along the Sterling models were more affordable compared to the rest of the range so people stretched themselves a bit and generally got the Sterling (with leather) instead of the lower spec models with cloth. Obviously some lower spec models were sold but they were few and far between in comparison. Also most, because they were lower spec, were viewed as "just a car" and many found their way into the Scrappage Scheme 10 years or so back and a lot of others have suffered the dreaded HGF and been scrapped - you get the idea.
Cheers,
Dave

Cheers Dave, good thinking re. going for a passenger side seat; I hadn't thought about that. At least knowing that the cushions are the same doubles my theoretical chance of finding one! Seems the odds are firmly stacked against it, though - I'll set an eBay alert just in case.

Yeah, swapping to leather is a possibility, but I'd really rather keep my car absolutely bone stock. I have leather in the Audi, and reckon the Rover's cloth is a bit more plush than the leather. It's just a shame it isn't a little tougher where panels join.

Kind of wish I had the space to have started stockpiling bits a while back, but as you know, that's a slippery slope!

Cheers.

Many moons ago when i was just a puppy Chris, i had a Mk3 Cortina. You've seen the cartoons where the springs come out of the seats/chairs/mattresses etc - that was how my drivers seat was.

I went to see the guy i got the car from (he was a local mechanic, specialising in Fords and particularly Mk3 Cortinas) and the only seat he had was a tan passenger seat - but he'd let me have it cheap.

Ended up with the backrest adjuster handle sandwiched between the seat and the trans tunnel but i wasn't bothered - i had comfort at last! The seat was in fact in better condition than the original passenger seat so i thought of swapping them but realised i wouldn't gain anything.

That was what made me think of repurposing something different originally. Now i have Volvo S40 alloys and expansion tank on my Sterling and a Rover R950 CD-changer head unit and CD changer in my Volvo.

Waste not, want not! :P  :D
Cheers,
Dave
