Turbo Coupe BRG Wanted

Post by scotty2 » Wed May 15, 2019 2:43 pm

I have had to admit that I have have an itch for a manual 800 Coupe turbo (or Vitesse ) in BRG to complete the set.
It will involve me getting rid of one of my other non rover cars but I'll just post this to tempt fate...

From AR Online:

In addition, the two-door coupe could now be specified with the 200hp turbocharged T -Series engine.

The only Vitesse Coupes were the turbos, rough rule of thumb is pre-96, 180PS, post 96, 200PS although there is a changeover period.
That should fit nicely with the rest of your fleet though, a 98 V reg BRG Vitty coupe. :D

Dave

I'll need to check the book (Rover 800 Story) for how many were made but I'm working away this week. Yes it would be great to have "the set". Yup, a post 96 Vitesse Coupe sound a plan.

Might be better to check "howmanyleft" to see how many are actually left if you're determined to find one!

I've got a pair of green coupe doors going begging if you do find one. :D

Book says about 1000 820 Coupes produced from 96 to 98. Doesn't break it down to turbo or non turbo models.

Allegedly there are only 97 left, 14 taxed, 83 SORN :

That figure hasn't changed much over the past couple of years so you might be in with a chance of finding one. It doesn't say how many of those 97 are coupes, Fastbacks or saloons though. Then there's your colour choice - narrows the field even more although BRG was a popular colour.

Dave

Will do - are you prepared to travel and would there be any compromise on the colour?

Travel not an issue but it has to be BRG and not a complete project as I have a couple of cars to sort out this year. Ambassador and Scimitar projects are now due to be started!

I'll keep my eyes peeled etc. :D

Ambassador project eh? Nice! Are you sticking with the "O" series engine or thinking about a T-series conversion?

Dave

I was planning on putting a 2.0 "O" instead of my 1.7 as it has a low oil pressure issue which I need to check out and tidy up the front end ready for some fresh paint - it's really solid but just starting to go and has marks from storage. I have heard that the T series being a derivative of the "B" block e.t.c. can be made to fit but I think driveshafts and end on gearbox would prevent a quick swap. Do they just mod the head onto the "O" or a complete swap? I did search for T series into Ambassador but didn't come up with anything...
I think a T series turbo Ambassador would be a bit scary!

I forgot about the "Mini-style" gearbox in the sump. :(

I converted a 2.0 "O" series Montego to 16v M-series power about 20 years ago - that was a beast! Would have knocked spots off the MG Montego Turbo that i'd previously owned. Also scared a Porsche 928 on the M27 just with sheer acceleration!

The M dropped straight into the Montego with only an engine mounting needing to be fabricated. I ran it on the "O" series EFI set up as i never had the chance to rewire it for the M series ECU but it still went like stink. The "O", M and T series blocks are all very similar so you could just swap the backplate and sump for gearbox in theory, might be a bit more involved but you'd be left with the original 4-speed unit from the Ambassador then. Next paragraph is an alternative route giving a 5-speed box.

Do you know the PCD on the Ambassador wheels? Seem to recall it's something a bit odd but that might be the Montego i'm thinking of. What i would suggest, if you can find a donor 16V 820 (assuming you want to do this of course) is to transfer the engine and box complete, make any engine mounts you might need (from memory it was the one on the timing belt end of the head i had to make) and use the Rover driveshafts. I do happen to know of a late 820Si/SLi (can't remember without trawling through some emails) that hasn't moved for about 7 years, might be a prime candidate for a donor vehicle while yielding some useful spares for your other beasts.

As for a Vit Sport powered Ambassador - scary!   :D

Dave

Just a bump to say I will be selling one of my fleet to make room for a manual BRG Turbo Coupe should anyone know of one for sale. I'll consider one with mechanical issues but I don't have time to restore a rotten one.
