Re: Mk2 interior
Perhaps texture was a poor word to use. We are talking about the A and B post trim which of course is the same as the plastic trim round the rear windows (listed as a 'sixth light finisher' by Rover). If you look closely it is not a flat colour and has a coarse matt feel. The fleck is similar to but not as pronounced as pebble paint.

Re: Mk2 interior
That's what i thought you meant - it's headlining material! Hence the mottled/flecked effect.

Think that's the right one, have a look at others to make sure though!

Re: Mk2 interior
No, sorry, it's hard plastic, not material of any sort. I have some headliner material (from Martrim) ready to redo mine as it did sag. Did the mk2a variant have material on the pillar covers (I notice yours appears to be mk2a due to lack of airbag); all mine are 2b and all hard plastic.
But that is an idea as a fall back. Hadn't thought of material, which is odd, as I had considered vinyl rapping.

Re: Mk2 interior
My Mk2a Sterling has what appears to be headlining material and in fact, the V reg 825 Si saloon i broke also had the same, as did the two A pillar coupe trims i got from Deano from his R reg 285 Coupe. Sounds almost as if you have an oddball there Mark or perhaps a previous owner stripped it off as it was peeling.
Definitely no airbags in anything of mine, hate the things with a passion but that aside, definitely a Mk2a, built just before heated seats became standard on the Mk2a Sterling and with them, a drivers airbag. I've retrofitted the heated seats though!

Re: Mk2 interior
I'm beginning to wonder if we're talking about the same thing . The removeable hard plastic trims on the A and B pillars that cover the metal work and wiring et? All our cars (and we have eleven) are all hard plastic and not fabric covered.
The first picture is of the A pillar trim and you can see where the paint finish has worn off and no sign of fabric. The next two are of the sixth light finisher, a close up of a scratch and the whole showing cracks to the top right.
And you say yours are fabric covered? How odd.

Re: Mk2 interior
Ah, my mistake! I thought it was fabric! Looking at the scratched one reminds me of why i changed the ones on my Coupe.

Have a look at those and tell me what you think. I'm fairly sure now you have mentioned the scratched bit it's that flocking stuff - spray/paint the glue on then puff/drizzle the flock on top. Let it dry then shake off the excess (which can still be used) and you have the same finish.
There are also self adhesive sheets available but for a few isolated repairs, this would probably work best.

Re: Mk2 interior
I have decided to retrim all the plastic but in order to get this slightly back on thread and hopefully help roadripper, I thought I would share the repair I have done on the sixth light finisher. I had a couple of broken 'lugs', so what I did was to level the lug down to the shoulder height and then make a grooves in the supports. Also I tapered what was left of the lug at the top.
I then cut a couple of new pieces from 1mm thick plastic card (the original piece is 2mm), taking into consideration the height of the lug from the main base of the trim.
Using two part epoxy and a couple of fillet pieces, I made a new lug by combining the new pieces over what was left of the old.
In order to further reinforce the lug without the shoulder, I used a product called 'milliput'. Simply formed to provide a solid block on to which the metal spring clips can rest. I also used a 'milliput' shoulder on another lug that had lost its support pieces.
The last image there also shows part of the fibre glass and metal plate repair of the plastic trim. So basically I have repaired the trim, ready to go back in when I have covered it a 'leather' vinyl. I have already done the A and B posts but these rears are going to be fun.
Hopefully there is something there for roadripper to think about and maybe perform a similar repair, unless of course you have found a replacement bit of trim.

Re: Mk2 interior
Looks like some great work there Mark! I'd totally forgotten about Milliput, it's a bit like Plasticine to use then sets hard like a resin-type plastic if memory serves?

Re: Mk2 interior
That's about right. Mix two puttys (putties?) together, it becomes very sticky, so good bonding properties. It can be shaped with water, ie a damp lolly stick and then it sets absolutely rock hard. A fantastic and versatile product.

Re: Mk2 interior
I'll have to buy some Milliput. My dad use to use it on his radio controlled model air craft and tamiya radio controlled trucks back in the mid 80's.
The repairs were long lasting. It's a pity he didnt keep some of his models longer, they are worth a small fortune now..when they appear on Ebay or Gumtree and the like.

Re: Mk2 interior
It's good stuff, used it during my apprenticeship for protoype building and such like. I had totally forgotten it until Mark mentioned it though.
