Post by scoobyh123 » Sun Aug 09, 2020 3:43 pm

Does anyone have an alternator from an 827 lurking in their stash they no longer want/need?

If so and you wouldn't mind selling it, drop me a PM! :D

I know you don’t use Facebook Dave, but a guy called Mark Sutton just posted this. I think it’s ok if I paste it to your post here.

Hi my father of 73 has reached that time where he needs to have a sort out of all his spare parts from all the rover 800 sterling he has broken to keep his own car going. There are far to many parts to take photos or list. So if you are after anything just give a call and have a chat. This name is graham and his number 01217430666. Birmingham airport location. Thanks.

No idea Dave but from the posting it was told it’s a mk2.

Just have to hope it's a 92-96 and not later in that case. :D

The short version is the windings (stator) and rectifier are burned out Adrian.

The longer version is the windings are connected to the rectifier by 4 screws, one had burned badly, the other three weren't tight so my guess is the burned one wasn't tightened enough and the joint heated up as a result. This would also mean that to cover the charging needs, the other two would have to work at least 50% harder passing more current than intended and ditto on the rectifier.

No, my maths hasn't gone wonky, there are 4 connections from the stator, 3 phase outputs and a common star point as the stator is star-wired 3 phase.

Bottom line is it almost certainly wouldn't be viable to replace the duff components but the stumbling block appears to be the rectifier as i can't find a listing for it.

That means either a good secondhand one or i'll have to buy one from Rock Auto.
Cheers,
Dave

Bit of an update - this afternoon (after a lot of research and cross-referencing which i'll come back to shortly) i pulled the original alternator back off the car and stripped it. I then set about testing the windings (bear in mind this was the original that i replaced because of a suspected intermittent rectifier fault that gradually got worse) and they tested out ok then the rectifier.

Finding a complete short on one sector of the rectifier to both the -ve and +ve rails of the outputs i concluded my suspicions were correct. Now for the fun part! The Nippon-Denso 100211-7070 aka Rover CJK46 alternator doesn't show as having a replacement rectifier anywhere in virtually all of the sources i have.
However by cross-referencing it via a supplier i can't buy from as i'm just a private individual, i discovered that the same rectifier is used in other ND alternators and for those alterantors, i found a replacement rectifier on fleabay.
I've ordered it, should be with me soon, i'll update further once i have something useful to update with!

In other news, the 827 alternator also uses an input from the fuel ECU and further investigation revealed (from a Honda WSM) that this should be in the order of ~4.5V - mine is currently reading 4.72V, possibly because the battery is low on charge. Once i've recharged the battery again i'll check it again and report back. I suspect that with a charged battery it will drop closer to ~4.5V, will be interesting to find out!
Cheers,
Dave

Sounds like a nightmare, frankly. Hope you get it sorted.

Would your modification to fool the alternator to charge at a higher rate have had any impact?

That's a very good question Adrian and the short answer is no. If the burning on the connectors between the stator and rectifier had been on all 4 connections, i would have said yes, at least possibly. The reason just one of them is badly burned is down to a poor connection, because all 4 screws were less tight than they should have been.

In many ways i'm now glad i kept the original alternator as i've now got a chance of repairing that fairly cheaply and getting the Beast mobile again. Once it is, i'll buy the bits piecemeal to repair the "new" alternator (the one that has failed so drastically) and then i'll know i have a working spare unit.

BTW, i haven't forgotten to send your steering column cowl, getting to the Post Office at the moment is difficult because of lockdown and greatly reduced opening times there.
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Andy on both counts! :D

The company i can't buy from want all kinds of autoelectrical trade things like headed notepaper/proof the business exists and so on - you know the general idea. Basically they're a trade-only supplier and always have been, i only knew of their existence because of having been in the trade although a long time ago now.
Even then i couldn't buy from them direct, that said with the discount i got from my supplier it was often as much discount as i would have got as a sole trader (which i was at the time, my supplier was in fact my previous employer who i'd parted with on excellent terms to start my own business) if not more so i didn't need to pursue that any further.

Thanks to being able to use their online catalogue i've managed to find the part i need (plus the parts to repair the burned out one) at sensible cost on fleabay. I also use another trade-only supplier that will sell to individuals but sometimes they're a bit cagey, in which case i can normally find their products easily either on fleabay or the local autoelectrical place.

However it's usually a case of confusion reigns supreme when i go to the local autoelectrical place and reel off part numbers i "shouldn't" know! :P
Cheers,
Dave

Hiya Dave.

If you are still in need of an alternator, I have one in my garage.
I would also be very interested to know the company that sells to trade only :)

Brilliant news Phil, thanks! Still waiting for the part to arrive that i ordered (in fairness today is the first day i might reasonably expect it though and not until at least lunchtime because of the post) so once it lansd and i fit it, i should be able to give you a definite yes/no.

There you go, i don't think i've missed anything about them not selling to the general public. :D

Thanks for the info. If you need it, just let me know.

I am currently looking for an alternative to the 800 rear ABS Sensors. It will only need to be the actual unit, as the wiring can be spliced in at an appropriate point in the circuit. One of mine borked recently...
