rear bumper support +poss towbar
hi i need a rear bumper support for my 1996 820 fastback as mine fell to bits when i removed my rear bumper to fit a towbar.
ps does anyone have any pictures of how to towbar fits as i think i must be missing some brackets from mine .

I've been trying to find some pics of a towbar of my own but I'm struggling.
This auction is for a Brand new MK1 bar.
It won't fit your car but will at least allow us to use the pics.
I'm doing some of this from memory so hopefully it should be right. This is all assuming that yours isn't a detachable type?
Does the bar look something like this one?
1 - Towball fits here
2 - Bolts round the towing eye. The bar sits underneath and a plate sits over the eye. It's bolted together with spacers between the two plates.
3 - Bolts straight to the floor using the pre tapped holes in the car.
4 - Hopefully you can see the holes in the bar below the towbar itself? That is bolted to the main bar with the flat of the sceond bar to the floor of the car.
In each end of that bar is a hole and they require holes to be drilled in the boot floor. There's usually a packing piece between the bar and the floor here.

They all look the same apart from the detachable types.
The difference is in the length of the neck not the design.
I made that clear just incase you were thinking of buying it incase you did have some parts missing.

I (now) know Chris is right about this, but I think that the length difference is pretty small. Mine must have been designed for a Mk1 (or even a pre-big bumper Mk1) as the tow hook on the trailer always scratched the rear bumper when hitching up...however one of these spacers sorted the problem just fine:They all look the same apart from the detachable types.

Most likely big bumper I'd say.malcolm_durant wrote:Mine must have been designed for a Mk1 (or even a pre-big bumper Mk1) as the tow hook on the trailer always scratched the rear bumper when hitching up...however one of these spacers sorted the problem just fine:
I guess the best way would be for a few us to measure some?
We could compare the ages then.
