Yes I'm in need of one now as the old one is making embarrassing noises - if any of you old derv owners have one kicking around still I'd be most grateful if you dug it out. And pay you of course.

It was the main pulley on mine that failed.

The one that's just behind the power steering pump, it points downward pushing on the belt from above.

Don't know if you recall but when you got the pug, you looked into the Rover's bay and noticed the tensioner was installed at a cranked angle instead of vertical and asked if it gave any bother. Well I'm pretty sure it is now!

Ah, the damper wasn't it. Yep I do remember now. It should be in a line.

The bracket that pushes down on can wear as well. Mine did, it has a copper sleeve and allows it to rock.

Well I read that keeping the damper compressed is the issue with installing them properly, so as mine is not compressed I should be able to get it out for a look without much of a risk.

My local Rover place is confident that they can get one but they don't know when - potentially a few weeks, may be more and I'm not sure how long mine will last. The other thing I was thinking of was seeing if the similar bits off Cherokees or Scorpios might do.

I've seen the damper replaced by a home made, manually adjusted bracket before. It was on a car owned by Pete Harrison from the 800 Yahoo group - the damper had broken and he created a replacement out of a few bits of steel plate a dn a few bolts.

He's since sold the car (to Malcolm Harvey, I think) so if you ask there, he may be able to send a piccie or two. It looked quite tidy and did the job nicely - and Pete said it was easy to set up.

I think the Rover chappy said the pulley wheel was easier to get than the whole unit. That and a bracket would be good, I'm not after automatic adjustment - the way mine is installed it isn't doing that anyway!
