1991 Rover 827 Vitesse Fastback J739ODU

I must say that this is a pretty reluctant sale... but I am trying to listen to my head and not my heart. I have had this car for almost a year now and it is a real pleasure to drive and as you will see from the threads, has undergone a lot of fettling to set it up for a long and reliable life ahead.

This is the car:

Image

One of the very last Mk1's made and one of only six 1991 827 Vitesse currently on the road.

You can read the thread from when I bought it from Brad here:

http://www.rover800.info/forum/viewtopi ... =15&t=9316

And the story of my time with the car here:

http://www.rover800.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9632

Not much else I can add really! Despite the colossal mileage the engine starts instantly and ticks over silently with no tappet rattle at all. On the road it pulls like a train and feels really quick. The interior is a lovely place to be, in great condition. The rear seats are perfect with soft leather. (They were actually in a saloon I used to have for a couple of years, but that is another story...) The fronts are good with some surface cracking on the drivers seat but nothing serious. I can offer the buyer a superb set of matching fronts, just need to swap the squabs onto the existing bases.

Important stuff like scuttle panel and expansion tank are perfect. Filler neck is sandblasted and powder coated. Brand new ball joints. Springs and struts came off a car I had fitted them to about 20k miles ago. Lots of other works done to bring it up to a reliable standard.

Passed the MOT this week. I put my hand up and admit I fudged the ABS issue a little for the ticket. The damned offside rear sensor is throwing an error light. I have inspected and cleaned and it all looks perfect, but go above 20mph and the light is back. I reset the light just outside the station and trundled in... :-) Also offside front caliper is still dragging a bit, but I will have that off again and have another effort at working it free-er. I can sort out an entire rear hub assembly for the buyer if they want - with a good read sensor.

It really should have a cam-belt and water pump ASAP, it would be a shame to risk damaging such a lovely engine by taking a gamble. The body is not show condition but it is very, very good. I really hope it goes to someone who can make the effort to improve it steadily in the way I have enjoyed over the last year.

I am only selling for the usual reasons, too much other stuff to do, never enough time, the problem of winter storage and keeping the vermin out etc....

So, give me the bargain price of £1000 plus something for the remaining tax (quite long if I recall) and you could be enjoying this fine machine.

I won't take offers, if nobody bites I will store it for my own enjoyment next season.

The car is in Shropshire, so take that into account before making your move!

Cheers and good luck.

I thought (looking at the other threads) that the belts and water pump had been changed Tim?

No. The belts weren't changed because the tosser who wanted the car before Tim bought it wanted them changed and then wanted the car cheap. So I only undertook to do certain jobs and not the cambelt. Then he didn't want it. And he's probably reading this now. Tim bought it knowing the cambelt needed doing. Which it still does, evidently.

Whoever buys this car is buying a really nice Vitesse which has been looked after properly by Tim who understands how to care for a car properly.

Hi simon thanks I will keep my eye out for it if it comes up for sale again, as I think this is the one when brad owned it I bid on on Ebay got out bid by £20, I remember he had two one went for £500 The other went for £620 which As I said might be this one as its got the later Mk11 door cards etc the other one I think was factory standard,Tell me did you hear of the 827 vitesse that came up for sale on carandclassic must be around three years ago bought brand new in 1990 used for two years garaged for around 18 years it was priced around £2000.00 as the chap said if it didn't sell he would put it through the scrappage scheme, Iam not sure if it sold but about a year or so later I saw it on ebay for around £2750 again not sure if it sold but the milage was around 36000 not quite mint not far off though, but at the time it wouldn't have took alot to get it mint again or maybe even concours, haven't heard anything about it on the forums at all even when I first discovered it, I hope it reappears as it would have be a shame for it to have been scrapped, same went for tony ponds 1990 vitesse as well I was told this was scrapped in 2004 Iam not sure about the 1988 vitesse he used on the first attempt lap of the isle of man as I cant find out what the reg was, It is a shame that nobody got there hands on both of Tony ponds vitesse's and they still exsisted today.

Do you mean in the Vitesse Mk2 form Gunnar? I think you may have confused things by asking that question on this thread as it's about a Mk1 Vitesse which was only ever available with the 2.7 V6 but i'm fairly sure the Mk2 820 Vitesse was available in Fastback form with LHD steering.

Maybe Dave Dollysprint could confirm that?

As for the Mk1 820 Turbo, commonly known as the Tickford because they added the body kit and a few other styling touches (Janspeed did the turbo conversion as far as i knew when i saw a development model), the others have answered that one! :D

Sorry chaps, still trying to find a house to move too so I don't get on here much at the mo.
The MK1 Vitesse only ever had the 2.7 V6 fitted and could be had with manual or auto gearbox. In 1988 Tony Pond chucked a modified one around the Isle of Man TT circuit in an attempt to average over 100mph for the 37 mile circuit, he failed, just. In 1990 he tried again and this time he succeeded, I mention this only because had he succeeded in 1988 the marketing people would have built a Rover 800 TT Vitesse as a limited edition for public sale. By 1990, when he succeeded the R17(mk2) was already signed off for production in late 1991 and so the idea was shelved. However there was still a wish to build some kind of special so Tickford were brought on board to produce the MK1 820 Turbo, build was limited to 563, saloon and fastback but this car never carried the Vitesse name. Janspeed had actually beaten Rover to it a year earlier when they offered a turbo kit to bolt to a standard M series 2 litre, only one was ever built, the kits were never sold and its longevity without modified valves and pistons would have been questionable, although it ran fairly low boost.
So it was only the turbo T series Vitesse Mk2 that had the turbo engine and the Vitesse name and could be had world wide. Initially only available in the 180bhp state of tune, as the Tickford had been. This was purely down to a self imposed restriction by Rover so as not to totally out shine the 2.7 engine, which by now was having to cope with losing bhp to the catalyst equipped cars. By 1994 of course the 200bhp engines were made available carrying the label of Vitesse Sport and by 1996 this would be the only state of tune available in the Vitesse, be it saloon fastback or now the Coupe in the UK. In Europe the Vitesse Coupe had been available since 1993, with some markets carrying the tag of Ti rather than Vitesse.

Thanks for that Dave - was there a Vitesse Fastback in left hand drive/Europe with the 200bhp T-Series?

I don't know which Mk1 M series Turbo i saw but it was definitely a Janspeed conversion, working with one of the local ARG dealers (a friend worked there, hence getting to see the car at close quarters) and it had the Tickford body kit, grey leather Recaros, body colour was (i think) Pewter Grey or slightly lighter. Think it was running about 4-6psi boost but can't remember now - long time ago! :D
