Re: Driver's window switches
It was seeing the blue one that did it, a long long time ago I thought it seemed like a good idea to colour code a lot of the interior to the car.
The colour of the casings and the stickers on the rear usually give away what's MK1 or 2. I honestly have no idea what was left now and what did or didn't work. I left that all to Mike when I sold up.

Re: Driver's window switches
I have identified my switches and fuseboards....
I would be looking to retain one spare for my Coupe.
I have other coupe switches for both doors still on my 'spares' car

Re: Driver's window switches
I have inherited the blue one. On a recent visit to Dave's I had a chat with him about these and he discussed his ideas for refurbishing them or improving them. I have an idea of my own that I want to try out on a donor switch, rather than experiment with the (failing) one in my own car.CHR15E wrote:It was seeing the blue one that did it, a long long time ago I thought it seemed like a good idea to colour code a lot of the interior to the car.

Re: Driver's window switches
Just for a bit of nostalgia this is the car the blue one came from. I owned it back in 2002/2003, I colour coded almost everything black to body colour inside and outside for some reason? Some looked ok, some didn't.

Re: Driver's window switches
I fitted Vitesse Sports to it later on but don't seem to have any of the pics saved.
That was a Sterling for reference.
Edit. Found one.

Excellent! I love that they've already started their journey out and about. Nice once Dave, and good luck Tom!traineefarmer wrote: I have inherited the blue one

Re: Driver's window switches
I've just ordered some IP67 sealed surface mount tactile switches to graft onto the boards as a trial. If that fails I've found a rocker switch that will fit straight in the top of the housing.

Re: Driver's window switches
Let us know how you get on with those ideas Tom! I've been a bit hectic since i saw you with several things including a trip to Grimsby for a set of 4-stud "Teleston" alloys.............

Re: Driver's window switches
I don't envy you that journey, dave. For a previous job I had to make semi regular trips to Grimsby. The roads between East Anglia and north Lincolnshire must rate as some of the worst in the country.

Re: Driver's window switches
As a "one-off" it wasn't too bad Tom, hot sunny day and i took the Jeep which was just as well given the hills i encountered! For some reason the sat-nav took me up the A17 then across the A153 to the A16 and the hills on that A153 (went past Cadwell Park raceway at one of the highest points along the A153 as well) were amazingly steep, some were incredibly windy too!
Quite funny going up a few hills, the vehicle in front just didn't have the torque to get up the hill easily so i gave the Jeep some beans and flew past them! One in particular wasn't impressed - he was towing a small trailer with some metal items on with a 110 Defender turbo diesel that emitted "zebra smoke" from the exhaust! One minute black, the next white then black again, white, black, white, black!
All in all a worthwhile trip, partly for the "day out", partly for the entertainment value of driving the A153 (i wouldn't want to go near it in bad weather though, it must be deadly!) but mostly to get these :

Been after a set for the Sterling for a while now but most sets have a 1 in front of the price i paid! Granted they're not perfect, one has some kerb-rash and others have minor dings but i'm sure a bit of fettling will have them looking bright, shiny and smooth!
Hoping to make a set of "floating centre caps" for them as well, if i can work it out so it doesn't look like some Balarat back-street bodge up.
Last time i was in Grimsby was September 2000 so i reckon i can manage once every 16 years!

Re: Driver's window switches
By floating centre caps I assume you mean ones that rotate and stay the right way up a la Rolls Royce/Bentley?
Have fun!
Rebuilding switchpacks is something I've also looked at. I also have an idea for a nifty solution to stop water raining off the side of the roof into the car from the open window (and no it's not just shut the window before you say anything!)

Re: Driver's window switches
Spot-on with the description and the inspiration on the floating centres Dusan! I've found some 3-part thrust bearings on fleabay which should form the basis of them (2 per centre) so now need some 10mm round bar, the outer centre cap and the counterbalance weight to go inside.Alucard7002 wrote:By floating centre caps I assume you mean ones that rotate and stay the right way up a la Rolls Royce/Bentley?

Shutting the window is of course the obvious solution but not always possible/desirable for whatever reason so some sort of "umbrella" to go over the door frame would do it - not much help on the coupe though! Looking forward to seeing your idea!
