Saw this while scanning Autotrader. A very nice car indeed.

I will let the photos talk for themselves.

That colour is stunning. Looks like the car has been well valeted...
Has had an aftermarket rear parking sensors kit fitted too...looks discrete enough.

That's it's original plate and has the chassis number 151620, so early production built in late july 1992. No mot history and no longer logged as existing at Dvla so its been off the road for some time. Its cars like this that make the site How many left so inaccurate.
Strangely no Clarion headset but that could have been changed I suppose.

What's that switch for in the dash behind the indicator/headlamp stalk Dave? Looks very like an LPG changeover switch with some sort of label stuck over it to me, maybe this was a Rover "dual-fuel" prototype? I know they did an Allagro with an LPG factory conversion in the late 70s that seemed to get lost in the mists of time somewhere, perhaps this was their 1990s effort? :? :?:

Image

Also that exhaust doesn't look standard issue either :

Image

I wonder if this is another of the "cosmetic restorations" we've seen a few of recently? :?:  :D
Cheers,
Dave

Its a Parrot hands free mobile phone thing Dave, although sticking it there would make it a pig to use.
On the LPG front, I'm not aware of any LPG 800 mules, although I know Rover were playing with installations on K series cars including KV6 in the late 90's and it was offered as an option as BMW pulled out and ran away on 25,45 and 75. Not a great many were sold though as I think it added circa £1400+vat to the on the road price.

I have this one now and the number in the picture was a private reg so that's why no history showed up .Lovely car inside and out ,expansion tank required but as we all know - no new ones left so going to remove and have it repaired.

Welcome aboard Rab (?) - can you get some pics up to remind us all of the car? The originals have disappeared so we're left with blank spaces! If memory serves it's the Nightfire Red in London somewhere or was it White Gold? Know it was one of the two!

Also regarding the expansion tank - have you considered the Volvo conversion? Works well and doesn't look out of place, especially if you get hold of a Volvo bracket (they're welded onto the inner wings of Volvos so a new one for £7.50 from Volvo is easier) and use an aftermarket tank without the Volvo moulding on it. They're only about £20 as well!
If you're interested i'll dig out part numbers/links to the bits in question. :D
Cheers,
Dave

That would be great Dave as my only option at the moment is repair - my mate who manages a bodyshop says a local place have a nitrogen welder which is used to repair plastic bumpers and he suggests getting them to repair all around the seam .However your Volvo idea sounds much better and tidier. My car is the Nightfire Red 827 Coupe with 70 k miles on a 1992 K Plate.

Here's the part number for the bracket, copy the part number and go to your Volvo dealer, they'll order the bracket for about £7.50 :

https://www.myswedishparts.com/oem-part ... t-30807973

The aftermarket tank can be found here :

http://www.partsforvolvosonline.com/pro ... ts_id=5752

As Phil has mentioned in his thread, you need to extend the fill hose and use a reducer as the stub on the Volvo tank is 19mm and the Rover is 16mm so a length of 19mm bore heater hose, a 19-16mm reducer, some 8mm bore hose and an 8mm straight joiner for the overflow pipe and job done. The original Rover cap fits perfectly on the Volvo tank and should be the correct pressure (about 16psi/1.1bar) and while some Volvos use the same pressure a lot of them use 1.5bar which is about 22psi and over-pressurises the Rover system.

To be honest, with new bits this cheap, by the time you've scoured a scrapyard for one, removed it, used a disc cutter to remove the bracket and then paid for the bits, your petrol to get there plus your time, about £30 will see you in the ball park for most of the bits brand new.
You'd pay at least half that for the bits from a yard, then there's your time and fuel to get there and back and remove the bits - say it costs you a fiver in fuel, £15 for the bits, you save a tenner going the second hand route. It'll take about an hour and a half of your time though - for a tenner.

As for trying to weld the old tank, you're fighting a losing battle. In an effort to reduce costs, Rover used polymer with a percentage of reground material in for the Mk2 cars. That means they're inherently weak and while you may fix it now, in another week, fortnight, month or maybe two months you'll be repairing it again.
This is what i realised about 9 years ago when i first got my Sterling and as i'd previously had a Volvo 740, i picked a tank from one of them to try. It's still in the car!
I've got a couple of new brackets to use when i get round to fitting the two second hand 850 tanks i bought for a tenner each from my local scrappy but while the Sterling is holding up then it's purely cosmetic, the Coupé on the other hand still has the original Rover tank so needs doing sooner rather than later.

Back to the matter in hand, there's a lot of useful information on this thread :

http://rover800.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2189

The guy that Richard Moss mentions, Paul Kenny did his Volvo tank conversion about the same time as i did mine but i didn't have internet at the time so neither of us knew about the other. He's in Australia and reckoned it worked a treat there so no worries about fitting it in the UK. Sadly Paul no longer has his 827, i believe life caught up with him and he had to either downsize his fleet or hang up his driving gloves.
Anyway, it's a tried and tested conversion and one that's well worth doing! :D
Cheers,
Dave
