Rear wheel arch sections

Post by SJG » Fri May 18, 2018 9:36 pm

Okay, so do you want the good news or the bad news?

Good news...

Thanks to one of our very generous and genuine forum members we have a pair of rear wheel arch sections for coupés to produce a template. We will have access to MK1 arches and should soon have some from mk2's as well. Having spoken to the people who made the coupe sills they would be able to produce the wheel arch sections too.

The bad news is that due to the complexity of the sections they are going to cost around £150 each (each, not for a pair). My suggestion is that this will make it too expensive. If they are ordered in a bigger quantity the price would go down, but I cannot provide anymore information at this stage.

I would be interested to have people's thoughts, but please don't shoot the messenger. Thank you.

Simon, good on you for looking into this and thank you. My thoughts on the price are that it's pretty much what I expected for a limited run, my only question would be is this the complete arch (from sill to rear bumper) and how much overlap are they allowing. That is to say how much metal above the arch curve are they keeping?

Dave, when Chris and I spoke prior to him cutting the metal out of the donor car we said to get as much metal as possible. Let me take some pictures of what he has given to me later today.

It's great that you've found a source for these Simon but that price is a bit steep. I know Dave said it's roughly what he was expecting and to a point, also what i was expecting but still on the spendy end of what i thought they'd be.

I appreciate it's a very complex form and no doubt that's most of the reason but the cost is going to put a lot of people off. Some photos might help though, even just of the donor panels. :D
Cheers,
Dave

This is the part Dean was talking about Simon :

https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID004567

Item #4 on that page, only the RH section available now at nearly £345 but recently Rimmers were selling them off for silly money like under £100 so i expect Dean was thinking why pay £150 for a repro part when the genuine is available in RImmers sale for less.

That aside, thanks for adding the photos, i see they include the inner arch section. Would i be right in thinking that the £150 you've quoted includes the inner arch repair section already welded to the outer repair section?

I'm wondering if it wouldn't make more sense to make them as two separate parts, an inner wheelarch repair and an outer wheelarch repair. Perhaps you could ask that question to the people who are doing the metalwork and see what they say? It's possible they're looking at making the entire repair section (inc inner and outer parts together) and that is bumping the price up. Also some people may only need one part and not the other.

From what i understand (and may be wrong) the inner arch is spot welded to the outer arch during production. Once the rotten outer arch is removed, it's possible there would be enough good metal behind to either repair easily or simply fit the replacement arch and plug weld from the inner arch to the outer.
If it's a bodyshop (or a well equipped DIYer) then a spot welder may be to hand and used instead.
Cheers,
Dave

Plenty there Simon, if the metalworkers can do that it's a good price.

Just checked on Rimmers to clarify the availability for everyone.
They have Coupe offside at £366 + postage, these are not discounted which probably means they have very few left.
They have Saloon nearside at £66 + £15 packing charge + postage, these are heavily discounted so they probably have a dozen or so
They have Fastback nearside at £166 + postage, these aren't shown as discounted so again probably not many left.

They are of course all MK2, Rimmers have nothing for MK1, nor both sides for any body shape, neither do they have a limitless supply.

Simon I have MK1 saloon repair panels if you need them for your endeavours, cut out similar to the Coupe ones, let me know and thanks again.

Thanks for checking that out Dave, I did think it a strange that Rimmer's were mentioned, if they had plenty of stock of all varients and all sides we wouldn't even be having this conversation as it wouldn't be necessary. I am happy to progress things further if people want the panels, the thing that folks seem to forget is that it takes quite a bit of time effort and money, it takes out half a day and half a tank of fuel per visit and several are usually needed, all in my spare time. So really what I need to know from people is do they want them? Yes I had a vested interest to get the Coupe sills remanufactured as I needed them for my car and it has been really satisfying to know that a number of cars have remained on the road because of them. With these sections I have no requirement for them on my car, so it's all about others want to do.

Excellent news Simon and great work on achieving this.

You can definitely put me down for a pair of MK1 rear arches, yes I would like to pay less but when you cant buy them anywhere I am happy just to be able to get them.

May be worth asking what qty's they would want for price decreases. IE: 25 arches would mean £x 50 £x then you could run a buy total and as numbers for parts are gained then balance may then sell quicker. Just a thought but i'm sure you have negotiated along them lines anyway.

Am I right in thinking that rear arches will fit the front wing on the opposite side (ie: a left rear are will fit the front right)?
