Of course this conversation can be done but that didn't leave the production line as a diesel. Its chassis number has it as a 2.5 KV6 automatic. Unless its rattling so much he just thinks its a diesel!

Definitely a conversion then, 2497cc is the cubic capacity of a KV6, the VM 2.5 diesel has a cubic capacity of 2499cc, someones just notified a fuel change. If someone buys this and sends a fiver to DVLA requesting previous owners and v5's I'm sure it will solve the mystery.

A diesel Coupe was never Type Approved so, as Dave says, someone did the swap sometime after it was registered. Possibly when the original engine broke.

What's that diesel engine like? I've only seen 1 or 2 that I'm aware of they sounded like tractors, as I recall.

They are not the most refined engines you'll ever see but they are very torquey and can show a surprising turn of speed. Expect around 40-45mpg depending upon driving style.

Love it! i'm looking for a Coupe here. Found one in a junkyard irrecup. If this one would be automatic that will be great. Also looking to swap the manual gear fo an automatic in my SDI.

I might be totally mad, but I just brought that car! I never intended to pay that much but with 3 or 4 seconds to go I just hit the button and it was done.

Here is why. I have owned Rover 800 series cars since the 1990s. As I looked after them, they looked after me and only the very first one (a series 1 800 fastback) let me down with a failed head gasket.

My 3rd Rover 800 was a 4 year old 825 diesel fast back. I owned it form years until this: https://flic.kr/p/9aos26
I have owned about 30 cars over the years and that fastback was without a doubt my favourite - even topping my Rover V8 P6B.

After the demise of the fastback, I brought a British Racing Green Coupe afterward but realy missed that diesel engine. I made enquiries about having my Diesel engine fitted into the Coupe but everyone said it was impossible as the entire loom, fuel lines, tank, clocks, and virtually every engine bay componant would have to be exchanged. And so I et the Fastback go to the insurance company adn spent the next few years trying to find another 825 diesel...but it was impossible. Still despite the 800 Sterlings petrol engine I was completely in love with the look of the car and in a moment of idiocy due to family changes sold it.

So I brought a Rover 75 Diesel Tourer which I still use every day. Its a superb car and I trust it completely to take me anywhere in the country. I hated the original seats so fitted a full set of MG ZT seats and Black leather wheel in: https://flic.kr/p/emY9xw

And then a few days ago I saw this unloved coupe. Now I dont know about you but I am in awe of the person who transplanted that engine! Just compare the engine bay with a standard 825...it is totally different andvirtually no parts are shared. Which makes me wonder....is it possible someone at Rover did this and beacuase they are not type approved snuck it out as an 825 Sterling? Once I get the car and log book I will trace its history, if nothing else but to shake the hand of the garage or person who converted it.
