827SEi how strange. :?
Rare poverty spec 827

Think how nice this would look with a hoover out, polish and some decent photos.

Not that many people going by Dave's figures in the other thread.

I guess what we have to remember is that when the cars were new there was quite a difference in price from bottom to top spec.

Is the lack of walnut clock surround a pov-spec peculiarity? What a weird way to save cash

Kate - I think the "SEi" badge was originally meant for a 214 and was probably added by the same person that added wood trim to the front doors and passenger side shelf (single airbag poverty spec) and any other detail differences. Shame they didn't add the puddle lamps to the doors and a few more bits really!

Adrian - That and no puddle lamps in the doors, several other things "missing" as well.

Reckon you're right Steve! Presumably the same culprit as applied the 214-esque "SEi" badge to the trailing lip of the tailgate.
Can't say i'm fond of adding badges unless they are either deserved, correct or were present on different models in the same range. That said i did add the "V6" badge to the bootlid of my Sterling (but it is a V6 so is both correct and deserved) and once upon a time, when i were a lad, i added an "i" badge after the "2000" badge on the bootlid of my Mk1 Cavalier coupe. It wasn't injected but because of a few "minor" engine tweaks (Piper Magnum 285/2 camshaft, Weber 38 DGAS [same as a 3.0 Capri/Granada] simultaneous twin choke carb, Jetex downpipes/Janspeed system - F'loud!!! and a few other bits    ) it kicked out a lot more power than the 2000i in the contemporary Mk2 Carlton which had the same engine as the Manta GT/E so IMHO was deserved. It was fast enough to blow the doors off a 3.0 12v Senator (D878 GVG - Kate can find that one quite easily i expect  ) that i thought was trying to car-jack me.

The ad says it was bought 20 years ago by an elderly gentleman. Let's assume for a moment he traded his previous Rover in against this one - it would make it either the last of the P6 or first of the SD1 models.
In those days, there was no i, Si, SLi, Sterling, Vitesse etc and the spec went up with engine size and power so a 2000 SC would be the poverty spec base model P6 then you'd get the 2000TC which had an extra carb and hence more power and usually a rev counter and front fog lights, then would be the 2200TC, again more power so you'd get head restraints on top of a 2000TC.

Moving up in the luxury (but not power) ranks would be the 2200SC (auto - single carb for more low down torque and economy) so you might get Sundym glass too and then the 3500 auto would get almost all the toys and the 3500S (for syncromesh, not Sport) would get all the toys and an MGB-derived 4 speed manual gearbox.

Similarly on the SD1, the 2300 didn't get a rev counter or electric windows, the 2600 got a rev counter and electric front widows and the 3500 got electric rear windows too and tinted glass and a sunroof as standard.
I'm sure there were other differences and this is only meant to be an example of detail differences, not an exact specification rundown so if i have something wrong or left out, it's not intentional, this is only a guide to how they did things.

The point of all that is if the old guy was "old skool", he would have hobbled into MEs on his Zimmer and shouted "You! Boy!!" to the Sales Manager, a sprightly 30-something, "I want a Rover 2700!"

I can almost hear the discussion now, "No, i want a Rover 2700, not an SLi or a Sterling, a 2700! I don't want to pay £30000 for it either!"
So no doubt the Sales Manager (irked at being called "Boy") would have bent him double and rammed a poverty spec 827 up the old guys rectum for as much cash as he could wheedle out of him!

As for who would buy a poverty spec model with the biggest engine now, someone who wanted a bit of a "sleeper" maybe or someone who didn't want the (potential) problems of the upper-spec kit or perhaps someone who wants to create their own version of a Sterling, Vitesse or similar. In that respect it's pretty much a blank canvas so they could tailor it to their exact wants. Alternatively, someone who has seen how rare they were when they were new and has decided to invest in a base model for the rarity value. Also let's not forget some people just don't want electric everything and find it more "soothing" to drive cars with less kit.

In the same way as a lot of people, myself included, tend to go for the range-topping model then a lot of other people go for the sporty model and some go for the base model, it's all down to personal preference. If everyone went for the range-topper, the base model would become redundant and hence the range-topper would then be the base model as well while depriving people of that big thing represented by just 6 letters - choice!
Cheers,
Dave
