Autoshite: F Plate 820i £200

Post by Dajazar » Mon Jan 11, 2016 8:29 pm

For anyone over on that site (and I know a few that are), this seems like a bargain. Just likely to be too far from me.

ahh haaaaa, in an alan partridge accent, if it was near me and it was a case of it being scrapped or used as a hack, id save it, 200 quid aint nothing, and id mot it, and then see if someone sensible would take it on, I'm not that much a fastback fan, and a montego engined base 800 is defo not me, but i got plenty of love for the marque even if it isn't saloon shaped and v6 powers.

but just where the hell is the damn thing.
fleet now includes
89 827 sterling auto saloon grey dead and gone
90 827 sli auto saloon pulsar silver

I believe they were also referred to as the 820e and Se - "e" for economy and the "S" was simply a trim level in the same vein as 820i and 820 Si.

Either way only about 118bhp in a 1200-1300kg car, not quite enough for lively performance! That said the early "M"-Series MPi used to shift - mine had a new pair of camshafts just before i got it and the person who introduced me to the car alleged they were fast road cams. Said persons brother borrowed the car a few months later and reckons he lost a Police T5 Volvo with it. Can't confirm either but when i put the engine in a Montego VDP that had cooked its "O"-Series 8v it went like the proverbial off the highly polished and left a 928 standing on the motorway 70-110.

Those were the days......................

Dave

I had an E reg 820SE fastback ( E335MDU I think the reg was, I still have the V5 somewhere and a set of keys ) for a few months and that was an SPi. 15bhp less than the MPi wasn't that much.
I bought it as a stop gap for £100 with a few months MOT. The evening before I picked up a 1992 Si to replace it, it was stolen and used in a robbery on a school. I believe they reversed it through the front doors and loaded it up.

The early M-Series MPi was 140bhp so the SPi was about 22-25bhp less. The later T-Series was 136bhp so the SPi was still at least 18bhp less. Doesn't sound a lot i agree but the same percentage increase on something like a Jag XJ-S (V12, 300bhp) would yield an extra 56bhp to put things in perspective. Also because the SPi 820 was a bit underpowered and the MPi about right for reasonably good performance, that extra 22bhp probably felt like more of a boost than it was.

Dave
