Might be late enough build to have an upgraded engine from factory. It seems after a certain engine number things were beefed up (I know of 2)

If we knew the engine number we might have a clue...

I think anything after 97 would have been upgraded but then there are still the late registered

Id be inclined to agree as there are some kettles that last into the 150,000 range. But then I look on the bay of E and see 75s with hgf and I know they are a different design but it still appears far too random for my liking!

It's all in the engine number, I think. Higher than a certain number and there is a good chance of better reliability.

Perhaps a fair run of 75 production at the start had pre improved engines?

We know from previous data with Dave Dollysprint that at some point, engine numbers vs VIN nos gapped out (by a few thousand, I think) near the end of 800 production. Where did all those "missing" engines go? Early 75's?

It was some time ago when I looked into the engine numbers on KV6 engines but from memory it went something like if the engine number began 25K4FJ730112*** then it was a factory replacement engine with a modified gasket, this continued into 113 and 114 and possibly 115.
The modified gasket fitted to production cars seems only to have been introduced very late on probably only the '98 cars getting them. Whilst it was an improvement its still no guarantee. Without digging out all the paperwork it roughly worked out something like 2500 KV6's left the factory with the modified gasket being line fitted. Some 3000 cars were retro fitted with the 112,113,114 and 115 engines either because of failure or factory recall, even if customer cars showed no signs of failure. Around 11500 KV6 800's were built between January 1996 and September 1998, almost half would end up having the modified gasket fitted either on the line or under recall/failure.
The 75 KV6 is a different engine really, so many changes were made and there is no doubt it is a more reliable engine, most HGF on the 75 KV6 will be caused by the 3 speed, later 2 speed cooling fan failing, the brushes burn out...........................BMW sourced part, just saying!
