You know more than me then Tom - where is the dealership? I know this guy comes from Brandon now (which is where i first saw his coupé a few months before he sold it, it had Nightfire bumpers at the time which didn't look too bad although wrong for the car) and he told me originally he's from the weest Midlands (he did tell me the place but can't recall it just now) but i have to agree, the new "MG" shang-hai-hoo-flung-dung thing is nowhere near as good as anything that went before it.
mjc9967 wrote:Yes Dave your last point might well be true, I may well have suffered from they'll-always-be-around-itis!

That was the time I realised 800's were getting thin on the ground, and I wasn't even sure I wanted a Mk2, but that was what came up. I remember unregistered 75's could be had at massive mark down but I just never liked them enough. I suppose looking back I may have still found a really good 827 Vitesse back then.
Not sure how long you've had yours Mark, i've had my Sterling nearly 9 years now but i was in a similar position when i bought it to you, although i'd already decided i wanted an early Mk2 saloon. I thought i was going to have to wait to find the right car (gold Sterling saloon) with low-ish miles and potentially view loads but in reality not many were about even back then. The first one that came up on ebay was a gold, Sterling saloon 7 miles from home. Contacted the seller to view it the next night on my way home from work and i picked it up a few days later so i was pretty lucky in that respect. Think i just about beat the "they'll-always-be-around-itis"!
That said, when i sold my last Volvo i was in exactly that frame of mind but some things are meant to be. I've now got the V6 version (which i always wanted) in one of, if not my favourite colour.
xpuffin wrote:This car has been on car and classic for some time now. It's a trade sale but the ads written as though it's private which has my alarm bells ringing straight away.
Much as I'd like to say let's hope it sells, at that price it's got no chance with those miles.
In the last year I have bought an 825 Sterling manual fastback with 32k an 825 Sterling Coupe with 29k and a Vitesse Coupe with 60k for slightly over half what he's asking.
Have you got a link to that car please Jez? Just curious really. Found this one (it's sold though) but it's not the one i'm on about :

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C718131

Also found an L reg Sterling saloon with 86k on the clock for £1995, obviously one that slipped through the continuous registration net and looks pretty good. Will need the cam belt/water pump/tensioner spring soon though. :D
Cheers,
Dave

yea, I kinda get that...
always handy to have donor cars for spares etc...
and there is something to be said for getting an unloved motor `back on the road` I have done it myself.
but after that they become outdoor ornaments

I guess it depends how much space you have.

That was always my problem, I had too much. :D

Not quite all 800s but you get the idea of how bad I once was. I think I'm 'cured' now though? :D

Hmmm, i don't think you're cured Chris. Been doing a bit of thinking about people i know who have 800s including some members that although i haven't met, i have exchanged PMs with and come up with the following symptoms of suffering "800-itis" :

1) Multiple ownership
2) Dog ownership
3) Trailer/camper/caravan ownership
4) Volvo (usually estate) or Jeep Cherokee/similar 4x4 ownership
5) Parts hoarding
6) Serial Rover ownership

Any or all of these symptoms may or may not be present at any given time. The ownerships above refer to either past, present or future desire to.
As a straw poll of the three other people within 30 miles of me that i know, three out of 4 of us (including myself) have at least 2 800s, at least one dog, two have owned/currently own a Volvo estate and/or a 4x4 and all 4 of us have a parts hoard of some description.

If you only have one of the symptoms (eg 1 800 and 1 dog) you have a relatively mild case of 800-itis. Two to three symptoms is average and four or more is a severe case of 800-itis for which there is no known cure except more 800s. :D

Personally i think i have terminal 800-itis - 2 800s, 2 dogs, a trailer, Volvo estate and a parts hoard. Also previously owned a pop-up camper (glorified trailer tent), Jeep Cherokee and three previous Volvo estates (oops! Make that 4!), a reasonably big parts stash and have owned Rovers on and off for 30+ years. :D
Cheers,
Dave

They have opened a dealership in Brandon. Can't remember what they went as before, but it's the one on the high street near ALDI.

As for not being as good as what went before, they aren't even close to anything on sale now. I've spoken to owners and read reviews that focus on the ownership and driving experience and it comes across as very average. I had a good poke around an MG3 in the Longbridge sales centre during POL this year and the build and engineering is shocking. SAIC (I can't join in with the farce of calling them MG) have cost-cut these things so severely they make Ford look like rank amateurs.

The interior trim is so flimsily attached it's barely there, loose unsealed wires and sagging looms in the engine bay, open weld seams with no sealant, overspray, and so on.

A terrible, terrible car. The MG6 seem a far more together car but you would expect this as it carried over much from the Rover 75, but they seem to be plagued with far more niggly and expensive faults.
Tom.

I'll have a look next time i go into Aldi for a chainsaw and maybe some bread and milk! Might even see if i can blag a test-drive as well, just for fun!
If they're as bad as you say (and i don't doubt what you're saying) then it's amazing they've sold any - it's sounds like they make BL at their worst a Rolls-Royce by comparison.  :?

I have to stop now, tlc for all that need it. The Mk1s finished, I'll start a thread on it soon. All tucked up for the winter as I just bought an old xj8 as a smoker to tide me over, oh and an MP4-12C too so I've used up all my car buying tokens from er indoors.

What is an MP4-12C? Got a feeling i know or should know but can't think of anything that matches even closely except an XJS-12C! If you're using a mobile device and auto-correct it's possible that's what it is i suppose......... :? :?:
