How many were made?

Post by Manalishi » Mon May 04, 2020 8:09 am

I can’t really find any figures for the production capacity of the 800-range.

How many were made from the very first mk1 to the last mk2, including Sterling, exports, LHD etc?

Are these figures available?

I did find a post here saying about 125.000 mk2 were made, but not sure if that includes LHD?

I'll have to go mountaineering in my dining room tomorrow Henrik to find the Rover 800 book and see if that gives any production figures. :D
Cheers,
Dave

Mk1 production 193,529 of which 116,117 sold in the Uk, , some 77,300+ sold Rest of World, which includes the 34,872 that went Stateside. I personally think there is another 4000 to add to this figure, these were the cars built in Japan by Honda in a reciprocal production plan where Cowley built 2500 Legends but details are sketchy.
There were 123595 Mk2's built, just over 75,000 selling in the UK and circa 48,000 selling Rest of World.
Total build from July 10th 1986 to 17th September 1998 was 317,124.

Lifting this with an additional question, mostly directed to Dollysprint Dave I think?

Is there any record on how many 827 Vitesse were made with manual gearbox pre cat?

Something in the back of my mind says there were only 44 Mk2 V6 827 cars made for the UK Henrik, that would help give you an idea of how rare the 2.7 manual is.

For the exact answer, it will have to be Dollysprint Dave though. :D

Wrong model Dave. You're thinking of the 2.7 manual Coupe (like mine) and there were 62.

The Vitesse in Mk2 was a 2.0 Turbo.
The Vitesse in Mk1 was a 2.7 V6

Yeah but no but yeah.......................but .................Phil! :P

You're right in that i was thinking of the wrong model, it's the Mk2 Sterling 827 that only had 44 manual models made.

The Mk1 Vitesse with the 2.7 V6 was the "real" Vitesse IMHO - historically all Vitesse models used the largest engine of the range. The original Triumph Vitesse was a straight 6, 1600cc that fairly rapidly grew to 2000cc, the next Rover Vitesse was the SD1 which used the V8 then the SD3 which used the 216 EFI R or S series lump at a time when the only engine options were 1300 or 1600, Honda or Rover respectively.

As the Mk1 827 Vitesse used the 2.7, it followed the path of its predecesors. Granted the T-series turbo pumps out more power so in theory if you did it purely on power alone that would be the true Vitesse at least in the spirit of the Vitesse having the most powerful engine. Just a shame we never got the C32 for the 800, or better still, the C30 as used in the original NSX - a 276bhp Rover "830" Vitesse would be quite some animal! :D

Dave

To add some feeling on Daves rant (positive rant) I can give some light on... nothing. But here goes:

My vitesse coupe t16 180bhp (upped boost so probably 215-220bhp plus loads of torque) is very fast between 2k rpm and 4.5K rpm. Very fast. Faster than the old Lexus Gs300 I had and that was a 3litre V6 of 250bhp.

But... after 4.5K it really isn’t that fantastic. Sure it’s a fast car for it’s age still but some more breathing would be nice.

So. Comparing. The manual mk1 Vitesse Non cat 2.7 with stated 177bhp... Smooth pull from tickover. Easily fourth gear in 15-20mph. Pulls like a train. But, Absolutely no where near the pull from the turbo in 2-3k rpm. (That one is a Beast there...)

But... After 4K rpm the 2.7 pulls so Much harder than the turbo. Making the car feel like it’s a 900kg Gti.

So comparing is difficult But the 2.7 wins. Smoother pull all the way, and really quick!

So my conclusion, and this is where my rant starts as I compare the 2.7 vitesse with a Honda:

I have a 2004 Accord with the largest 2.4l vtec four cylinder engine. 190 bhp. 0-60 is some 7-7.5 and top speed is 140mph. Everything looks great on paper. And if using the stick it’s a quick car. But absolutely nothing happens before 4k rpm. So the 2.7 is so much nicer. The pull, the torque the edge... 15 years of Honda evolution and the 2.7 Win hands down.

So my verdict:
The 2.0 turbo. I always am surprised when I want to shift into fourth gear and it’s already in! A beast. 0-60 isn’t that great but 40-100 is fantastic.

The 2.7 non cat manual. Wow. What a car. Same pull from 1000rpm to 6500rpm. Joy!

Ooops. Off topic..?
