Re: AUTO JOURNAL 15-04-1987 - The war of the 6 Cylinders
...the following
They had a problem in the article, so in the next number, they give the complete information of the performance of the car
The conclusion of the article is that the winner is...
...The Rover 825 Sterling !!!
The conclusion translate with google :
Very curiously, it seems much less easy to define the reasons for purchasing this or that of these models, than to point out the major negative points. So I would personally hesitate to buy the Opel or the Mercedes because of their box, the Alfa because of its handling, the BMW or the Peugeot given their mediocre CX, Renault, Ford or Lancia taking into account their old engine, the Volvo bringing together at least 3 of the drawbacks already mentioned ...
So, by doing this by elimination - and although cars like the Alfa, BMW and Opel are still terribly appealing to an athlete - I will retain the Rover, whose overall drivability, comfort and quality of presentation make it a particularly homogeneous car ... despite its Japanese aftertaste
It is not the best victory never seen, but it is a victory !!!

Very interesting that! Or at least the bits i understood! A bit surprised Volvo didn't supply the later B280E powered 760GLE rather than the B28E, it would have faired better on performance and economy. Also surprised they didn't get all manuals or all automatics, would have made for a fairer comparison across all cars.

Perhaeps that the new motor for the Volvo was not again availble on the French market at this time ?
I agree, it is strange to compare some automatic gearbox and some manual gearbox, but it is very difficult to have in same time so many cars in the good definition.

The new B280E engine arrived in 1986/7 and i can't imagine Volvo producing two separate engines for different markets with the same emissions requirements etc. Also looking at the car in the photos, it's pre-facelift so would have had the B28E, just very surprised Volvo didn't step up to the mark and supply the latest version - it seems all the other manufacturers did.
As for the auto/manual thing, it's annoying when they do that but sometimes they have no choice. However there was a no-cost option of manual on the Volvo, same as the Rover.
