I Just Bought a Jag

Post by funkkydrummer » Wed Feb 20, 2013 7:49 am

Picked up a second hand (well, 5th hand) Jag X-Type at the weekend. It's a cracker!

Basic stats are:

3.0 AJ-V6 engine with permanant all wheel drive via a 5 speed manual gearbox
Body coloured everything
Black leather interior
17" wheels
Sport model
94000 miles on the clock
Full service history (mostly main dealer and local Jag specialist)
Immaculate bodywork and interior

Only issues (that I've highlighted so far):
Suspect transfer box - I thought this was just a snatchy clutch at first however there is a definate clunk if the clutch is let out quick. Tried bringing the car to biting point with foot on brake in 1st, then the same in reverse and there is a clunk from the gearbox area. Also, high pitched whine in lower gears (not very loud). If anyone has any experience of simillar issues some advice would be gratefully received!

Small oil leak - don't know whether this will amount to anything or if it is overspill from a previous oil change.

Small coolant leak - radiator seems ok from what I can see as is the hoses. Some further investigation required.

Will be getting the wheels off and the bonnet up this weekend for a proper going over.

Some pictures from the advert on eBay. I'll post some of my own when I get time and light to take some.

Yeah I know, it is really just a Mondeo underneath.

Although, this could also be said about a lot of other cars these days what with platform sharing and the likes.

And a lot of cars from years ago actually with badge engineering!!

It's less than 30% Mondeo and all the better for it.

That crap again! There is practically bugger all that is shared - try bolting some X-type parts onto a Mondeo and see how you get on.

Of course, your favourite drive is just a Honda Legend with a few tweaks........

Ha ha, amazing! :D

I've already signed up to Jaguarforums and found the guys on there pretty helpful regarding my transfer box issue. Pity it looks like its going to cost 500 notes to fix!

As for the SatNav CD changer-ma bob - if there is one going cheap and its easy to fit Im all for it! Its only got a standard Radio / Tape / CD Changer effort just now.

Actually only bought it so I can put the MK1 827Si off the road for some summer fettling. I'm already getting quite attached to it though - other than the obvious issues, it is a pretty decent motor!

mind the wheels the alloys cost £200 each to replace, ebay ones go for 150. transfer box and DMF are why I went for the 2.0 auto petrol with lpg conversion.

My uncle once had one of them as a rental, 3 litre V6 - an early one. But I disliked looking at and in it so much, I was not bothered about a test drive. They are rare and cheap over here, but I still consider them not worth a look...

Well the engine fits (AJ-v6??? don't make le lagh it's a dressed up ST220 motor with bigger holes).. the gearbox fits as do the do the front struts, most of the back end on the FWD X-Types.. that 70% 'jaguar' parts are in reality the superficial bits of it bascially the exterior panels and the interior. Actually I like them a lot, they just should never have had a Jag badge glued on, had this continued this would have had the same effect on Jaguar as the 200 series did on rover, bascially flushed its premium marque value down the toilet to ford/vauxhall levels. What ford should have done, is make the X-Type 100% jaguar.. and then base the Mondeo on that making the Mondeo 30% Jaguar.

Jaguar do not need a 3-series rival. If Tata do make one then they really should play it safe, and put a viking longship on the front of it, in the markets they will sell the vast majority of them in the brand is undamaged, and thanks largley to Land Rover.

TBH the phoenix lot missed a trick by not returning to the 2nd largest car market in the world with MG. What they should have done was federalised the F (the 75 was already federailsed and a lot of initial testing was done over there, BMW were going to return Rover to the US) and shut down the 25/45 lines
. Sales of the F would have gone thought the roof

Thats interesting, I never knew the late 3.8 S1 E=type had bits of honda legend in it.. did Dr Who design it?

Anybody know anything about cars with all wheel drive?

I suspected the transfer box was on the road out so took it to the local Jag specialst. He reckons the box is fine.

My question is, if I let the clutch out to the bite point quick is it feasible that I should hear a clunk from the gearbox / transfer box / propshaft / diff? I know that there needs to be an element of play / backlash in the system but I dont know whether this would be audible or not.

Anybody any ideas?
