Sorry - can't help on the Jaguar specific details. However I do seem to recall that tired transfer boxes were a fairly common feature of X-types

Yeah, i'm lead to believe that the boxes have very little oil in them when they leave the factory and they are intended to be sealed for life with no maintenance required. Not very successful by the looks of things.

I'd replace it if I knew for sure it was goosed but £500 is a lot to spend if there is no guarantee that it will solve the noise. I guess I just need to trust the specialist!

TBH the phoenix lot missed a trick by not returning to the 2nd largest car market in the world with MG. What they should have done was federalised the F (the 75 was already federailsed and a lot of initial testing was done over there, BMW were going to return Rover to the US) and shut down the 25/45 lines
. Sales of the F would have gone thought the roof
Have to disagree with you there Stewart, this was debated many times in Rover from 1995 on, and there were 2 major problems with launching the MGF in the states. The first was lack of production facilities, hence one of the reasons Mayflower built the bodies. And the second was reliability of the K series 1.8 in moderate climates let alone the heat of California. British Leyland/Rover had a disasterous history in the states ever since the demise of the TR7, and although sales of that car were relatively strong in America, it also showed the Yanks exactly what was wrong with the British motor industry. Poor build quality and unreliability and long waiting lists( and that was when Speke actually built a car)
I thought then and I still think today that had the Mgf/tf been launched in the US it would have been the usual 30,000+ sales in year 1 followed by massive warrant claims and a short abrupt death of the Mgf within 3 years.
What does amaze me though is that the Americans seemed willing to put up with Landrover products which also suffered all the above "britishness" until sold to Ford.
We all know that the baby Jags had Mondeo DNA, in the same way Lexus has Toyota DNA, and lets be honest its done Jaguar and Lexus a lot more good than harm.

Funny you should mention the sills.

Where the plastic over sill meets the door jamb I can see rust starting to bubble up through. Had a look underneath the car and all looks fairly solid though.

On the XJ40s, there was a reasonably common problem with rubber "doughnuts" on the prop shaft which would manifest itself as a 'clunk' when taking up drive sharply.

I know there's next to no commonality between the 40s and the X-type, but still maybe worth a look?

With any 4WD/AWD system there are a whole load of extra CV joints and UJs - and of course they are all liable to clunk when they wear a bit. On a Jeep or Landrover you just say "they all do that"

Well, Jag's off the road! And I can't even re-commission the Rover until I get a set of steel wheel nuts (replaced the alloys with steelies recently - alloy wheel nuts not suitable)

Went out this morning, key in the ignition and was faced with a load of warning lights and the cooling fan running at full pelt. Turned to start up and got nothing. No engine turning, no clicks - dead.

I don't recall having even half as much trouble with any of my Rovers, or any other car I've owned for that matter, as I've had with this heap of sh*t.

Don't ever buy an X-type. No where near as good as the similar Audi or BMW equivalents on the reliability front.

Ouch that doesn't sound good, I've always quite liked the X-Type's too. I hope it's not too drastic.

Ouch...

Anyway - to your dilemma with the wheelnuts: If you use the original Rover alloy wheel nuts with the chrome cap, these are suitable to use for steel wheels. If you look at them you'll find that they extend beyond the (rotating) cone that fixes the alloys - at the end there is the proper mating surface for the steel wheels. The original nuts are long enough to go over the studs and fix steel wheels that way.

Regards,

Alexander
