Swapped side repeaters and rear lights for clear V70 items, fitted Pro Sport Coilovers.

1996 manual Volvo 850 R Estate.

I've always loved the 850 estate, since seeing them in the BTCC when very young. Couple that with loving the noise and power of the T5 and it had to be done at some point.

Back in November I was having a casual look at T5s and T5-R's on eBay, with no real intention of buying one, until Lloyd popped up and told me he had an Olive Green Metallic '96 850R estate that needed some work for the MOT (handbrake cables, tyres and stopping the front wheels rubbing at lock) and a VIC check as it had been written off, but bought back by the owner, and had a new driver's door and wing put on.

I went and had a look, the car was sound, the respray job is reasonable and the price was right for a manual R estate in a rare colour, so I splashed. Lloyd very helpfully delivered the car to my door that evening.

It's taken me since November to get the funds together to get her sorted and back on the road; thoughts the mechanicals were sorted for the MOT (which was a bit of a farce) a while before now.

Plans for now are tidying her up and sorting out a couple of things that need doing; the suspension I sorted this weekend just gone with a set of Pro Sport coilovers, as the Spax springs on her made her ride like a waterbed.

Long term plans include a V70R turbocharger, full stainless exhaust, full induction, boost control and venting and a remap to somewhere between 300 and 350hp.

Very nice choice ..... best 'sleeper' there ever was ..... Even the Vitesse carries clues as to it's potential speed but the T5's never really did.

Get it chipped.

It makes a huge difference IMO, I sold off the standard T5s I had. Compared to my R I found them quite boring TBH. Without any mods they're just too quiet.

I was lucky though as I bought mine done. A big chunk of cash to lay out otherwise.

A remap is in the long term cards for her, Chris. Gonna get her to 'stage 0' if you will first, PCV and a couple of other things, then breathing - that huge collector box in the rear section has GOT to go.

It's not terribly dear from what I gather, 300-350hp is achievable under 1500.
Good exhaust, good induction ~500 19T from a V70R ~300 silicon hoses at the bends with good bolt clamps ~200 boost management ~100 and remap to anywhere between those two figures ~150, maybe an intercooler and reversed boost pipe kit if aiming for 350hp, standard intercooler is reportedly pretty happy with 300hp. Apparently no need to mess with fuelling or internals until you're staring down 400 odd, which is further than I want to take her anyway.

Incidentally, have you found a UK Volvo forum you're happy with yet? I'm having trouble finding one that seems welcoming or well run, and I'm having problems logging into volvoforums.org.uk at the moment, keep getting an Incorrect Redirect URL after entering my username/password.

Maybe I'm just tight?

I only paid £930 for my car with the remap already done. 8)

Mine needs the PCV doing as well. Have the bits, just haven't found the time/interest.

Mine is more than capable so I have no plans to touch it TBH, though if I had a criticism it would be I would like more low down grunt. My pet hate of turbo engines.

Oh and grip in the wet. Mine's that bad when trying to drive it quickly it's been parked up over the winter.

Volvoforums is the only one I've been on, though TBH I've not been doing much foruming at all. I went quiet on here due to too much else going on. So I didn't look for a replacement if that makes sense? I've only looked in when I've needed info not to take part as such.

Aye, I can't blame you there. :(

Not thought about looking for an AWD R? Was a gorgeous black one and a gorgeous Saffron one on eBay at the same time a couple of weeks ago. Do love Saffron.

Bloody bargain at that price for an R tbh. Have you investigated the diaphragm in the recirc? Reportedly if the diaphragm is split it can cause a lack of boost development at lower RPM's - something else I think I need to do on mine as she only really seems to go hard after 4k, and there's rather a lot of airy noise under low rpm throttle.

I've looked a few times. Seen a lot with the rear disconnected though.

It was cheap, right place at the right time I guess?

I've hardly touched it TBH, I may look into later on.

Aye, it's quite common apparently, the planet gears in the diff don't like the torque, and tend to strip, so people simply disconnect the prop, much like with the Freelanders.

Not a terrible job to replace them by all accounts, but the gears themselves are rather dear, though a lot of dealerships carry them in stock.

Do they have a proper centre diff? I was wondering because the Calibra 4x4 used to trash its 4WD system if the tyres were not identical sizes at all four corners - and needed to be rotated around the car to allow for wear.

I'm sure it's not but I don't have the interest at the minute.

Another 800 owner getting a Volvo! Nice find there Vard, bit of a bargain from what i can work out!

You've found the volvo forum that seems to be the most helpful/informative and the login problems have been solved as far as i know - i don't have any trouble logging in anyway!

Something that might interest you is there's a lad on there fitting the T5 engine to a 1988 245GLT and modifying the engine as he goes. The thread runs to something like 60 pages, nice bit of bedtime reading for you! :D
Cheers,
Dave

Antz, the fella up in Huddersfield?

Wonderful looking machine that. Also worthy of note that he's using Vitesse Recaros.

Got him in one - wondered if you'd seen the bit about the Vitesse Recaros! He's got very little left to do to finish it now but it's all fund-consuming stuff from what i gather.
Would love to do something similar to my 740 but just can't these days, regardless of cost. Can't wait to see Antz "255" finished though, it's certainly going to an awesome sleeper!
Cheers,
Dave
