I see a Vel Satis near me quite regularly in dark red almost burgundy in good nick. Not a bad looking car.

Not to everyone's taste but, looking at modern Mercs and BMWs which are grotesquely fussy, these compare well - individual and easy to keep clean with no fussy strakes or fake air inlets or unnecessary spoilers.

One criticism of the styling of the Vel Satis is that it isn't ugly enough. I kinda understand that opinion but find the cars styling both brave and attractive. It panders to no ones usual set styling parameters. It is extremely easy to live with, see out of, park, get into and out of and to wash. It is comfy with the best seats of any car I have ever sat in.

I wasn't going to post about this as it's another Vel Satis bought by me, not a Rover.

However, I wanted to highlight and stress a point we should all bear in mind when buying a car.

The owner of my latest (7th) VS bought it 3 weeks ago and in good faith from a dealer in Gloucestershire who stated it was his personal car and that he'd had it a couple of years. He traded from home, I think.

The clutch went on her way home and needed bleeding/topping up and there were lots of other problems. She had to buy a new battery after a wrong diagnosis by the RAC who said the battery needed to be replaced - in fact the car has a power drain somewhere and the new battery is flat again after just 48 hours. The immobiliser/locks never worked and the car needed to be locked manually from the passenger door. She was never given the radio code or the service history. Or the second key. She paid £925 for it and tried to get it sorted via the 'dealer' but he didn't want to know. Bastard.

This lady is just 24 with young twin sons and I've taken on the car and given her some much needed cash towards another one. She's buying from a proper dealer next time! And not a Renault.

Today, I had a chance to look at the car properly. The rear calliper on one side is seized and the disc completely rusted out. In my opinion, it's not worked for a very long time. How it got an MoT is amazing. I'm taking this up with the VOSA folks tomorrow.

Some people in life need protecting more than others. Never more so than when it comes to money and cars.

When i bought my Saab 900 last year it came with a brand new MOT, brusty brake pipes and discs that were so rusted/chipped/warped that the car was damned near undriveable. "MOT my arse" (as Jim Royle would say)
