Chrysler Grand Voyager 2001

Post by Richard Moss » Fri Jan 24, 2014 10:50 am

I've just agreed to buy this - a 2001 Chrysler Grand Voyager 3.3L, 4 speed auto with column shift. High spec with leather seats, front and rear (triple zone) climate control, electric door opening/closing, CD player, cruise control, DVD player with roof mounted screen, etc. You know the kind of thing - if they can attach an electric motor to it, they did (including the rear quarterlights which can be opened from the driver's seat) It has done about 250,000km and all but the first 25,000 in the hands of one owner. A lot of car for under £1700 - although it would probably be cheaper in the UK because cars here hold their value more.

It needs a bit of work - new brakes, fluids service, fix an oil leak on the transmission, replace a few bushes and deal with some serious dash lift (I'm an ex-Rover 800 owner so know a bit about THAT). I hope to collect it in the next few days and will upload more details when I do. I just love these big old buses - I used to have a second generation one (1994) with only one breakdown, a failed rear wheel bearing. They are so comfortable that I once drove 1800 miles in 3 days without even a hint of backache or leg cramp.

hmmm, not a good choice really.. (No offence)
The petrol version is so thirsty, so much so that the newer ones i was looking at (2006 model) go for 1500-2000 less money then the 2.8 desiels.
The later models also come with the `stow & go` seating system where all the 5 rear seats drop flat in to floor in seconds
On this model the seats do come out but weigh a ton and you need somewhere to store them(garage etc)

I was looking at these for awhile but the kids are more grown up now so have no need for one now really...

I do love the remote sliding doors though :)

Well, fuel isn't an issue at 30p/litre and these are more economical than my Jag and Jeeps! The diesel isn't even available in this market. I don't need to remove the seats any more than once in a blue moon (on my last voyager I took them out twice in 4 years/80,000 miles). If I need to carry stuff, i will probably drop the seats in the back of the Jeep and use that anyway. This has been bought as a people carrier, pure and simple

The only real mechanical weaknesses that these things suffer from as all connected with the transmission. I will be giving it a filter and fluid change and fitting an oil cooler so that should help to ensure a long(er) life.

I've had two of thes Grand Voyagers - both 3.3 models.

A great car for a family or a single person (all the space in the back is very useful for both types of owner).

I nearly bought a third a year ago but ended up in another Espace - a much sportier vehicle with greater style, maybe, but just so unreliable.

Good choice, Rich.

No need to when the Abu Dhabi government sells it at a small loss (check my location over to the left of the screen)

I had to change the transmission solenoid pack on this as the first job, along with replacing the cracked/blocked radiator and new front discs & pads but everything is going well so far. The new solenoid pack was relatively cheap (under £80) and transformed the gear changes from rough, jerkuy ones to smooth as a jaguar ones (smoother, in fact). I've done a few other things such as rear hatch struts, new wipers, a couple of minor electrical jobs, new serpentine belt, oil and filter change, new air filter etc plus spark plugs (a fiddly job on the rear bank).

Most of the rest has been cleaning etc:

Wheels before and after using "Wonder Wheels":

Headlights before, during and after sanding off the faded/pitted yellowness and polishing up wet and dry paper followed by G27 cutting compound and some "Plastic Headlight Restorer" :

But the most remarkable job was cleaning the leather seats. It didn't look like they had ever been cleaned so I attacked them with a nail brush and "Vanish" soap (or the local equivalent), followed by wiping down with a sponge. I scrub the soap mixture in to the leather with the nailbrush, leave it to "act" for a while and repeat the application. Then a wipe down and dry off gives the result shown below. It works equally well with plastics, especially the textured stuff on door cards.

This weekend's plans include a look at the passenger's electric window to see why that doesn't work (electrical or mechanical?) and maybe a look at the non-functioning door handle on one of the sliding doors.

My mother in law in Sweden has one of these and I drove it when visiting Sweden last year, it is a 2001 petrol (think it's either a 3.1 or 3.3) auto. It was having trouble with it's thermostat and dumping it's coolant, so we tried to obtain one locally but they were in the region of 40 quid (ish).

I removed the stat completely for her as she had some long journeys to do before she could replace the stat. I know it's not ideal but I thought it better to keep the cooling juice inside and run cool rather than boil over constantly and dump it's fluid. Her one hasn't aged well to be honest, lots of rust both body and mechanical but obviously maintenance can make or break this sort of occurrence.

The only thing I would say to keep an eye on is the middle rear seats which as you know are removable but when the mechanisms get some wear in them they frequently fall out of their runners/catches dumping the passenger on the floor in a heap. Happened to me twice on two different seats.

Pleasant enough thing though all in all, kickdown is entertaining and there's a ton of toys to play with in them too

OK, confession time.

I spent an hour or so dismantling the right hand sliding door to see if I could work out why it wouldn't open from inside (the remote control and outside handle were fine). I pulled off all the interior trim, dismantled the handle etc and still couldn't get it to work.......................

.

.

.

................... until I realised that the child lock was selected "ON". 1/2 second later, the handle was "fixed" - proving that the child lock was doing EXACTLY what it was supposed to do. DOH!

I also had a go at the passenger side electric window and found that the motor was partly seized and the power feed to it had been unplugged. I dismantled the motor, cleaned up the armature, lubricated it all and it now works well enough to run all the way up or all the way down but then overheats and sticks until it cools down. So, a new motor will be required but they're only about $40-45 (£25-30).

Nice work, RM

I have often wondered why plastic headlamps only go opaque on the outside. Why not on the inside surface as well?
