I'm a bit loathed to do that as it tows so nicely. I'd hate to swap to something none standard and it make it worse.

It's all proper ALKO stuff on mine too, wheels are stamped as much anyway. I guess if it were a car it would make sense to get the better deal long term but I reckon if I swap the tyres now how long will it be before I do it again, if ever?

If memory serves ALKO used the Ford 4-stud pattern so if you could find someone with a 4-stud Ford and borrow a pair of wheels with wide tyres you could try it and see before deciding.

Tyres perish with age and also go hard so maybe sooner than you think for sapping the tyres again!

I think they're 100mm PCD, not sure on newer Fords but older ones are 108mm PCD?

God knows who I'd ask anyway TBH.

Good points but the old ones seem to be doing ok at 18 years old! Joking aside I would never risk that long term.

Not sure on any actual law? But I always work on 5 or 6 years depending how they look for replacing tyres. Assuming I have the car/van/trailer etc long enough which doesn't happen often. :D

I had to swap the ones on the 800 trailer this summer as they were just starting to show signs of cracking after 6 years on the trailer. Wasn't worth the gamble so I had 2 cheapos fitted for £78.

That would be the Vauxhall (4 x 100PCD) stud pattern then Chris, i knew it was one or t'other! Same idea applies and maybe you can now work out who to borrow some wheels from?

I think Ricky is right, i seem to recall something about the law on trailer tyres being they must be replaced at 6 or 7 years old or sooner if they are perishing. I don't think it's that well known or enforced by the powers that be though.

Dave

I can't see any mention of a law on the net about it?

I know several people that think as long as the tread is good the tyre is fine.

I've had a look as well Chris and can't find any mention of it either but it's odd both Ricky and i think such a law exists if it doesn't.

That said anyone who thinks a tyre is fine simply on examining the tread without checking for cuts, sidewall damage, perishing etc is probably an accident waiting to happen! You know that anyway......... :D

Been and priced up new tyres. £39 each, I'm happy at that.

He also confirmed what I suspected regarding the age of the old ones. They are original to the chassis and are marked as manufactured in 1997! Seems hard to believe?

New ones are being fitted tomorrow as my brother is moving house at the weekend and needs help to move larger items.

That's not too bad a price Chris - i asume that's fitted, vlaved, balanced and the old one disposed of?

I dread to think when the tyres on mine were made - probably 1979 at a rough guess!

Hope your brother is "helping" with the cost of your tyres? :?:

New tyres are on and ready to roll, job done was £117. I would've taken the trailer down but still sorting bits yet but otherwise that price was for everything. The 19 year old tyres will end up as chippings are something similar now I'd assume?

Just need to sort the front lights. They've sent the wrong ones to match the ones I have so I'll just fit two sets and then do the others later. Bit annoying but nothing I can do.

Maiden voyage on Saturday then. Going to be a long day as I'm going straight to my brothers from work Saturday morning. Looking forward to that, not.

Always a nice feeling having new tyres on, not too bad a price either.

Hope you've got the Acro-props for your eyelids on stand-by for saturday! :D

He's changed his mind again now, going to be the following week as before.

Gives me a bit more time to get jobs done now at least.

Front markers fitted, wondering now whether a set in the middle might be too bright in my rear view mirror?

I've bodged an inverter in to see if it would run the lights easily. Which obviously you can see it does. I'm in two minds now how to wire everything up. I may fit separate batteries for each job (i.e. one for the winch, one for lights, one for sockets).

I'll see when I've had the trailer weighed to see what capacity I still have left, if any. :D

"Let there be light!" and there was...... and you could see for f***ing miles! Or at least could be seen for miles!

More seriously, i think the middle front marker lights wouldn't just be too bright for your mirror, i think they'd be IN your mirrors - constantly!

I think i'd be inclined to fit just one or two large (something like a 644) batteries, probably centrally in the front end of the trailer or one each side, just in front of the wheel arches. Wire them in parallel so you have all the power you need/want whatever the task in hand is.
Then cover the roof in solar panels and fit a charging regulator - totally off-grid workshop! :D

Dave

A test will certainly be in order as it is now to see if it warrants fitting anymore. I wonder now if I should have bought the 6 LED version instead of the 12?

I'll give it some though power wise, need to see if it's needed yet.

The ones i bought for my trailer that i was building on a caravan chassis only had one 10mm(?) LED and round the rest of the rectangle they were mounted in was a reflector so they gave enough light to be markers and also reflectors.

I suppose on the power front it's one of those things - if you don't fit it you'll need it, if you do you won't! In that respect better to have it and not need it but then again maybe a compromise with some sort of power pack you can add or remove as and when you're likely to need it. Maybe even something along the lines of these :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from= ... r&_sacat=0

Covers almost all bases with that idea?

Dave
