Old trailer project

Post by CHR15E » Wed Oct 19, 2016 5:12 pm

Something like 22 years ago now my dad built this trailer along with my help, he put a lot of time into it but for the last 10-15 years it's just been a skip basically. I think you could count on both hands how many weeks it's spent empty in that time. Always full of something either for the tip or just because there's no where else to put it.

With trying to get straight I've decided to give it an overhaul as the floor is suffering now. Due to the way my dad designed it though it means it's now or never to tidy the rest of it up so I'm going to do a mini restoration on it.

My brother is already pre warned about painting it.

To be quite honest it's a pointless exercise as it'll probably just end up doing the same job sat outside but I think if it's sits much longer it will end up not worth doing.

Silly me forgot a before pic so this is from 2 or 3 years ago taking a tyre changing cage I had at home to the scrapyard. It weighed 500KG believe it or not!

As it stands now after an hour so pulling it to pieces.

Not enough money in it I reckon?

My biggest problem when doing jobs like this is over spending. I think the key is doing the essentials without doing it the way you'd like to see it done as if you were keeping it.

I reckon by the time I'm done after new flooring and 1 maybe 2 sheets of ply for the sides and paint it'll be getting on for £150 to refurb it.
Plus any odds and sods.

What's it worth after that realistically? So once you factor in any actual profit I reckon you'd be better off on the dole? :D

You're probably right Chris - i was just looking at the price of using checker plate for the floor in my trailer and it comes out about £200, plus of course paint and any other "extras". Even if i go for just normal 2mm mild steel sheet, i'm still looking at about £100 so going to look at the price of wood instead, not sure what sort of wood but probably ply or OSB or something of that ilk, cheap and cheerful.
Cheers,
Dave

Guess it all depends what you're putting on it?

If the floor will be exposed I think I would consider biting the bullet and getting the checker plate, at least that way it'll be fit and forget?

The eternal question Chris - why does anyone need a trailer and to put what in it? :?

Generally speaking it will be garden/household rubbish with the occasional bit of furniture or domestic appliance and sometimes some FUBAR car bits.

The big thing is it will be rarely used apart from for storage like your old one was. This is sort of pushing me towards putting it on ebay as spares or repair, there's a lot of things i need to do to it to make it how i want and in all honesty i'd probably be better off shifting it for whatever i get for it and starting from scratch. If i start at all. I think it might be better for me to just hire/borrow a trailer if/when i need one and use the Volvo for most of the tip runs.

With that in mind i think i'll get a cheap sheet of OSB or similar and a cheap tarp/groundsheet and use it over winter as storage then decide come the spring what, if anything i'll do with it.
Cheers,
Dave

I know exactly what you mean, that was the reason I decided to build the other trailer rather buy something I wasn't happy with. Not cheap though, not sure I dare work out what I've spent!

A lot of my use will come from projects I have planned at home, maybe a thread for another day. :D

It does make me think about the sense of doing this one up though. Especially when I have several lengths of 22mm floor boards sat in the garage doing nothing that would easily serve as a new floor for it.

Decisions decisions. :D

Hmmmmm, floor boards, floor - no brainer!

Thing is you're going to get use out of yours so it's worth doing, you have plenty of jobs/projects lined up for it and if you had to buy a similar new one then i'd suggest it would cost you more than you've spent. Granted you can pick up those Erde thin aluminium things for a couple of hundred quid ready to roll but realistically would they be up to the use you plan? I doubt it somehow. I'd probably be better off buying one of those than trying to revive my old one to be honest for the amount of use i'll make of it. All horses for courses really.

Dave

Just to complete the story on this, after doing little else to it I decided it was time for it to go with the arrival of the caravan.

So I sold it for a small amount in the hope it will get used like it should be. Better than me just weighing it in.
