Malcolm's 4.6 P38 Range Rover

Post by malcolm_durant » Mon Apr 05, 2010 6:40 pm

Popped out on Saturday and came back with something other than a paper and pint of milk...

And the all importance "money shot"..! Four thousand six hundred cc of liner slipping, head gasket blowing Rover V8...this one seems okay and pulls like the proverbial train  The 4.6 is more economical than the 4.0 strangely, but I think the phrase "gas guzzler" was invented for these things - expect 20 on a run and 13 around town

Image

Nothing disasterous mechanical to report at the moment (starts, stops, steers, air suspension goes up and down and it isn't resting on the bump stops every morning...all the gizmos I can test work too (no tax yet, hence no hooning around sadly).

Considering the price (very cheap for P38) the body's all right too...some scuffs for your delectation...that warped rear bumper cover is very annoying:

If I had the money I'd swap all the tail lights and indicators for the post-2000 versions which are white/smoked. However at over £140 a set second hand I think I'll make do and look out some cheap replacements for the cracked lights as and when.

Car was absolutely filthy inside when I got it, but a damn good hoover has sorted that and I hosed it down today and got the Back-2-Black out to good effect. Fixed some simple niggles too like a sticky bonnet catch and bust rear number-plate lights.

Sensibly I need to give it a very thorough service as there's loads of history up to late 2007 and nothing after that (circa 25k travelling in that period). The rear tyres are only just legal and the fronts aren't exactly in the best of health either...I'll be looking for part-worns for now.

Being an HSE it's pretty much fully loaded with everything you'd exect to find in a top motor in the mid-90's (even the head-rests are motorised!!), but the radio cassette LCD display is unreadable and the air-con blows warm.

Several little niggles, but touch wood (except maybe one airspring which is much older than the rest) I think I can possibly look forward to some gentle titivating here and there for a month or two...that's tinged with pragmatism...I know how badly things can go wrong on these!

Wish me luck!!

I was looking at those the other week but don't like the tailgate setup personally.

Thinking of LPG'ing it?

Yes, quite possibly once I know for sure it's running perfectly. I'll do a "Richard M" and accumulate bits from Fleabay rather than shell out for a whole kit.

In truth, I've got a bigger hankering for a manual gearbox...if I see one and can afford it, that'll wing it's way to me first. Apart from the (somewhat hard to find) R380 'box with V8 RR ratios, everything else needed can be found on a manual diesel, so pedal boxes and the like won't be a problem.

Couple of folk on Landyzone have done just such a conversion, so I know it's do-able.

Quite like the tailgate set-up myself...novelty and all that!!

Almost forgot to mention. It came with those plastic light guards fitted all round...well, except where they'd been smashed off (explains the ding n one front wing).

Although they are genuine Land Rover parts, they're plastic rubbish that wouldn't (and didn't...) protect the lights from anything bigger than a suicidal sparrow.

I pulled the rest of them off yesterday and before hosing it down spent over an hour peeling bits of self-adhesive foam off the wings (hard rubbing with white spirit eventually shifted 95% of the glue - panel wipe wouldn't touch it).

That was fun, but it looks so much better without them IMHO and I've probably improved the aerodynamics enough to push my economy up by 0.001mpg..!

Harsh. Just not user friendly enough for me.

Shame as I do like them.

In all seriousness Chris, you know you can drop the suspension down to the bump-stops (it's called easy access mode or something similar)? I'm over 6"2' and couldn't reach the back of the boot without clambering in myself...

Boot is huge...it's like a fairly sizable van if you tip the rear seats forward! Well impressed by the P38 for that, as RR Classics have pretty small boots given the size of them...

Very nice car, my uncle had one of these in Belguim. I cant remember what he'd done with it. I'm not eve sure if he's still got it :?

The Cream interiors in these and the Land-Rover Discoverys remind of the later Rover 800 interiors.

Yes Please! :D

I love the huge gas guzzling cars you cant afford to run and the puzzled expressions on peoples faces when you try to justify buying/running it. I get it all the time

Sound like my mk1 shed. LCD is bleeding and air-con doesnt work. In fact nothing feeling like cool air blows out the air ducts, not matter what setting you put it on. Roll on summer and sweat :(

Well, after less than two months I'm now going to prep this Rangie for sale

I'm splitting from the missus, and money is going to be extremely tight (in addition to several other major financial uncertainties...) so this is a luxury I cannot possibly afford now.

Even more annoyingly, it has new disks, pads and caliper guide pins all round, new drag link and track rod assemblies, will shortly have new air-springs, has 1999 model white lights fitted and loads of little things like tailgate struts, cruise control is fixed etc etc.

Planned on it being a keeper as it's pretty straight and solid despite the external scuffs and recent neglect, so this is yet another victim of circumstance. Bitter; you bet and the P38 is one of the things I'm least sore about!!

Anyone got a solid and legal £200 Astra or Escort 1.3/1.4 they'd want to part-ex against this in a few weeks? Semi-serious question I might add
