Re: Rover 825 Sterling Diesel Coupe - Diesel Car magazine vi
Its been ages since being here but like a family member that only calls when they need something..here I am!
Update on the Rover.
Winter proved to be no real trouble although I did run out of electricity one night somewhere between Stanford and Corby. I first noticed the Alternator light was on dimly and then driving on the A1 could see the lights were a little yellow on the road and then one by one the car started shutting down probably things with long wires where the current couldn't reach; ABS warning light, Cooling level light and then finally touching the bakes would cause the instrument panel to die completely. I turned off a junction too early which meant I had no idea where I was and dare not use my phones sat nav because I would not be able to charge the phone if i needed it. Fortunately I managed to find a car that had working headlights and followed it stealthily to a village and parked outside a handy pub to wait for rescue. The recovery guy gave the Alternator a wallop and the car started charging again so he followed me for a few miles until I was happy that it would be ok the rest of the way home. It turned out to be a dodgy connector to the Alterntator so fitted a new one last week and the car is fine.
I spoke to the Diesel Car magazine photographer a few weeks back, he says they are still going to print the article but didn't know which month.
Front pipe flexi section has just blown out so picked up a new one. Its going into the garage later in the week to have some other odds and ends doing (and if I can find one in time a new steering rack)

All the issues have been sorted and the Coupe is booked in for MOT at 9am tomorrow.
I cant think of anything it may fail on...but one just never knows.

Re: Rover 825 Sterling Diesel Coupe - Diesel Car magazine vi
failed on a loose cable tie on the steering rack gaiter. In all fairness the tester did say he tried to tighten it but it really needs a metal clip - ah well the retest is free and this was on a £12 groupon voucher so cant complain at that.

Re: Rover 825 Sterling Diesel Coupe
You can buy stainless steel clips that are similiar to cable ties on ebay, specifically for steering rack and CV joint gaiters.

You'll need to work out what size you need and order the right ones. Pliers are usually needed to get them tight.

Re: Rover 825 Sterling Diesel Coupe
Its been a while since i posted much about the Diesel Coupe so thought I would fill you in.
You might recall I originally wrote 'taking the car up to 70mph is an "Event" ' and the car was very uncomfortable at 70plus with no extra power if required. This was because she was suffering from "carthritis". Over the last year I have been 'running her in'...and slowly building up the revs. As time goes on I have been waiting longer and longer between gear changes and it has paid off.
She is a totally different car to 12 months ago and revs freely up to 4500rpm feeling faster and extremely responsive between 1000 and 3000rpm, she now sits much happier on the motorways and can sit in the fast lane with the Mercs and Beemers with plenty of additional power and the possibility of scoring license losing points! I do allot of country lane driving and now 30-50mph is much more exciting and as she revs freely I can change down through the gears (to 2nd) before a corner and accelerate out the other side with quite a turn of speed which was impossible 12 months ago - changing into 2nd would result in a very uncomfortable slowing down as she was not happy revving. The only thing still needed is to address the turbo lag which is noticeable under 1000rpm. It was not this way on my last 825 diesel so I am thinking about looking at the turbo bearings, but this is not a priority as I can drive around it.
I wish we had taken some acceleration times and taken her onto a rolling road when we first bought her - I think the difference would be very significant.

Re: Rover 825 Sterling Diesel Coupe
What diesel are you using in it?
Several years back I ran a MK1 diesel for a while and found it ran far better on super diesel which was suffering a bit like that. Almost needed a 2.5 gear at times.

Re: Rover 825 Sterling Diesel Coupe
Along similar lines to what Chris is siggesting, try BP Ultimate Diesel in it Darren. It does make a difference! Also try some diesel injector cleaner through the tank - get two bottles, pour the first in at "double dose" then the second at the recommended dose and try a few "Italian Decokes". There are smart phones apps to measure 0-60 times which regardless of their accuracy could be used for comparitive purposes as long as you used the same app for "Before" and "After" times.
Another thought - is Tara too early for a DPF? IF not and she has one, try running without for a week then replace it - you'll notice a difference 1if it's blocked. Others have used acetone to improve performance/economy in diseasels - a teaspoon to a tank ful is about the usual starting measure and you could go up or down in dose from there. Apparently it helps the diesel atomise for more complete combustion but only a very small dose is needed (<1%)

The 800s don't have particulate filters, Dave - they're all way too old for that

Thought not Richard but couldn't remember what year DPFs came in.
