What about doing some head/manifold work on the 820 to boost your power and converting it to liquid phase? Wouldn't have thought that would effect the insurance too much, especially if the head/manifold work was not entirely obvious to the average eye?  8)
By interwebs results on Rovertech and guesstimation, blueprinting the NASP T16 should yield ~150 - 160hp with the right cams and exhaust.

Cost:benefit ratio however is my concern.

Right now the 820 literally owes me nothing in my opinion, its 14 pence per mile fuel cost compared to the modern offering means I would have to buy a 900cc eurobox and keep it for 7 years to break even...

I'll keep the 820 as is and maintain it, it gets driven hard but maintained well.

Like I said I'm window shopping for the 800 replacement due next year

Not worth me spending my hard earned savings on a Ford Mundano or the like of equal vintage. May as well skip a few generations of vehicle design and go for something much more modern.

Only trouble with going more modern is the choice is far less IMO.

Certainly in estates that I'm after anyway. The change in tax bands killed off a lot of the bigger engined stuff.

Very sound thinking there Dusan! I was thinking about 150-160 bhp with some headwork, a K&N replacement panel filter and a few other subtle mods so wasn't far out. Still give you 14p/mile or thereabouts too.
Cheers,
Dave

Well it's been a while since i updated this thread, mainly because there's been little or nothing to report! Just before xmas, some inconsiderate person of dubious paternity hit the coupé, damaging the front bumper and slide bracket.

Today i've had a hectic but satisfying afternoon! As it was actually passably warm for a change, dry and there was this strange yellow thing in the sky, i thought it was about time i got on with the coupé.

Major surgery ensued! Here's a couple of pics "mid-surgery" :

The donor vehicle, not that it gives any clues yet :

No, it's not a deliberate mistake leaving the number plate off. I had to transfer the plinth from one bumper the replacement because of the plate mounting holes. Then, Sods Law - the holes had stripped so i need fatter but shorter screws to refit the plate for the time being. Eventually the plate (once i get a new one) will be secured with trim tape.

For now though the replacement bumper and slide brackets have tidied it up immensely and at least the bumper is secure again after it's pre-xmas prang! Just the cat to refit and a few basic checks and an oil/filter change and it will be in for MoT.

Then the hard work will begin, changing the interior!
Cheers,
Dave

There's more pics to come from todays efforts Jez - there's a BRG 827 coupé with 64k from new in Northern Ireland for £1750 on Gumtree at the moment. If memory serves it's on an M reg but looks very nice and original.
Cheers,
Dave

That big, warm, round yellow thing was floating about in the sky again today so more work on the coupé ensued! Along similar lines to the last progress report, i'll throw some pics in then the explanation :

As for todays efforts, can you tell what it is yet? :P

That's right boys and girls, it's a replacement bonnet! :D

Image

After way too much time getting the bonnet strikers to line up (it's amazing how much difference there was between the two apparently similar cars!) and several nasty moments where the bonnet wouldn't open at all, changing a bonnet striker (twice!) and various cursing, swearing, head-scratching, thinking and more of the same, it eventually opened and shut properly.

That was enough for today, next job i think will be the cat..........
Cheers,
Dave

Last friday i took the coupé for the MoT and all was going well until the emissions test. Looked good to start with then the CO started rising on idle and going stupidly high (5%++) when the revs were brought up.
Checking a few obvious (aka silly) things revealed nothing and the only clue was the yellow LED on the PGM-Fi ECU was on steady (idle too low) so i paid up and went home. Two miles from home, the PGM-Fi light came up on the dash. Looking under the seat at the first chance revealed a single solitary flash of the red LED every few seconds, pointing to the front Lambda sensor being dead.

On past experience i ordered a pair, knowing if one dies the other won't be far behind.

The new Lambda sensors landed today about 1030 and the rear one took about 10 minutes to fit, including cutting and crimping the old lead (with the connector) onto the rather short lead from the sensor.

The front one took 7 times as long! Firstly it was harder to get my paw into the space available and secondly, every time i got a few turns on the thread, the sensor unwound itself, as if on a clock spring! Seriously! I didn't believe it either but i watched it happen! Eventually i got enough turns of the threads in to hold it in while i fitted the Lambda socket and tightened it up properly.

I got the carb cleaner out and (once i'd refitted the ECU memory fuse), fired it up and gave a good few squirts in to clean out the EICV and throttle body in general.

Then i took it for retest :

Image

"Can't get much better than that!" - the testers words not mine!

Combination of good maintenance (i know, i know, i should have spotted the dying Lambda but it genuinely died in action on the emissions tester first time round), a pair of new Lambda sensors and giving the cat a good soaking in several dishwasher tablets and a load of hot water! The amount of sh!te that came out of the cat, it's no wonder it struggled in previous years to meet the emissions!

But there we have it, another years life for my coupé!
Cheers,
Dave

Sadly not RIck - too much walking about for me i'm afraid. Might try and get to that Ragley Hall thing the next day though, looks like a lot less time on my feet.
