There are supposed to be two 5mm thick steel plates on top of the chassis rails when you fit the towbar - do you remember seeing them in the boot of my 820?

The 827 doesn't have them! Dealer fit towbar is my guess  Naturally without the spreader plates it's ripped the rear chassis legs to bits, doesn't help that they are rotten as rotten gets...

Previous owner fit or Dealer fit would be my thought. It is the proper Brink towbar that replaces the rear crash bar - not the dodgy boot floor type (those are only fit for <750kg garden trailers)

Either way a spectacular failure of intellect!

Don't know, then again most of the structural steel on the car is scattered along the A14, M6 and M42 these days. Don't ask me where the rear bumper to inner wheelarch plastic trim is as it was there when I bought the car...

Now that made me smile! Not my intended method of vehicular preservation, nor a valid one.

The folks in blue may have something to say about 1.5t of Ifor Williams careening down the motorway with the remains of an 800 hooked on the front

Dad's 820i back in the day ripped the boot floor in half after towing a SIII Landrover on an Ifor Williams...

I've seen others that are fatigued around the mounting holes.

The boot floor type just doesn't compare to the proper one in terms of strength (when fitted properly!)

I don't remember seeing the spreader plates but then i wasn't looking for them - i was looking more at the toroidal tank install.
I always find it amazing how some people and/or garages manage to get by in life by leaving things like spreader plates out. Same sort of mentality that loses all 4 wheel nuts changing the wheel on the hard shoulder (lane 3 maybe!) of the M25!!!

Hopefully it's not too badly stressed and you can fabricate some sort of repair to enable Shitesse to continue to serve as a tow-car.
Cheers,
Dave

Fair enough.

I'll acquire some 5mm boiler plate, bang a couple of holes in it, weld up the cracked chassis, many washers as spacers and problem solved.

I would say from experience they were the exception not the rule IMO.

I would agree on strength to a point.

Over many years of towing with 800s of my own and seeing my dad doing it we've never had that.

The boot floor tow bars are far more common than the crashbar type. I've also seen several versions of them, some better than others in the way they attach so I do get why you're not impressed with them. Some of them I wouldn't use either.

There does seem to be a range of boot floor types.

The worst just literally bolts to the spare wheel well

Then there is one I've seen that hooks into the towing eye.

Then there is the best which hooks into the towing eye AND onto a plate welded on the crashbar.

Personal preference really. I much prefer the crashbar type anyway as it maintains ground clearance and you can remove the towball so no cracked shins!

It also depends on what you are towing and how. Garden trailers are no issue as they are so light. Caravans have to be driven gently anyway otherwise you loose your crockery ;-) Big Ifor williams in the city centre of Brum behind a High Comp 827? Lets just say it didn't help matters that my brothers preferred method of leaving junctions was sufficiently rapid that I couldn't keep up in the 820 ;-) (yes the 820 on gas is that damn slow that the 827 towing a laden Ifor williams is quicker!)

Agreed. :D

My dad was no better at times. I did it with the Rover trailer now and then. Mostly on my old V70R though. Had some nasty looks at times because they didn't like what was happening. :D

Towbar "fixed" by nicking the reinforcing plates off my 820 and bolting them onto the 827.

Image

You can see the torn mounting holes as the person who fitted the towbar to the 827 did not fit the plates. This happened towing a 1.5T Ifor Williams trailer...
Image

Part of the fleet...
Image

In the end there was 1040kg of scrap steel in the Ifor - Train weight of 3460kg... with me in the car I was technically overweight on train weight. The trailer weighed approximately 1800kg so was over the 1600kg towing capacity of the 827... opps!

Image

Once the Ifor is sold on I'll put the plates back on the 820 and knock up my own out of some 5mm steel.

Also, no workmate = no problem!
Image

Oh and the door handle broke - I couldn't find any bailer twine unfortunately...
Image

The interior has been binned as nobody wants any of it. Soon I'll have the dash out and the only gauge will be my speedo Heads Up Display and a £5 multimeter set on ohms for the fuel level. Duck tape and bodger braket'd in place.

Heater controls will be a 22mm household ball valve for Cold/Less Cold and a switch for fan on/off.

I'll get it on the local scrappy's weighbridge out of sheer curiosity!

I think i still have a 22mm isolation valve that i removed from my coupe complete with pipe stubs on the end so you can have that if you want - assuming i still have it that is!

You'll still need to have a charge warning light to get the alternator to charge as the chances of the alternator self-exciting every time is remote. A 12v 3W blub should do the job nicely, connected between an ignition switched 12v source and the field/warning lamp terminal on the alternator.
Talking of alternators, if nobody else lays claim to it, i would like the alternator and starter please. I know we had a discussion about the engine recently and if that still stands then hopefully they will still be attached. :D

Dave

Cheers for the tip RE: alternator. I had forgotten about that!

We'll discuss parts when I come up and fetch those panels off you and Steve.

As an aside - this is happening.

Sounds like a plan - already posted a reply about your window mech plea in a similar vein.

What's with the B&W No Entry signs?
