Ryan's 1987 820e (pic heavy)
So today's the day that once again I headed off to Epsom to collect my new purchase. After a surprisingly quick train journey. I met with the original owner and his son. After a little chat and signing over the paperwork, I presented the original owner with a pristine copy of the 800 launch brochure, I thought it would be a nice little token and momento as the car had been a part of his life since it was new, he was over the moon with it. Then, out to the little garage that had been home to the car since new. We took a few more pics before we said goodbye and then I set off.
Mr Gordon saying farewell to his old girl...
Straight away I felt right at home in my new purchase, it was so nice sinking into those beige velvet seats once more. After a brief drive through town I was heading towards the M25. What a pleasant surprise the little single point injection lump is! ok it's not got the same kind of poke as a 6 cylinder but it's a smooth and nippy little unit. We made it up to the dizzy heights of 70 (probably the fastest it's been for years!) where it happily cruised all the way home, you really can't beat these early 800's for their blend of sheer comfort and ease of use, they're just great. As with my previous Mk1 it decided to spit it's indicator lens off but luckily I managed to stop and retrieve it this time.
On the way back I thought I'd treat it to a bit of a wash as it was covered in dust. It appears to be water tight which is good lol The interior is in lovely condition indeed, just needing a good clean. The headlining is slightly droopy but everything else seems to be in good order, even the original stereo works!
gotta love the 6 dial dash..
No dash lift here!..
So here it is, my new purchase in all it's glory. Sorry about the rubbish pics it was starting to rain and the light was fading but I think you'll agree it's not half bad for £800! I'm hoping it'll be a nice little project that'll keep me busy. It's not everyday you find a straight honest one owner car like this. Apart from a bit of bodywork that needs sorting, a good valet and service and a correct front bumper and wheeltrims, it's got the potential to be a very tidy original little car indeed and I love the fact that it's a true poverty spec e! it really has a basic charm

That's just wonderful stuff, and a very nice touch with the sales brochure.
I had a similar experience with my Merc 260e - I bought it from a guy who'd bought it as a retirement present to himself (although in my case I rather suspect he'd spent the last of his money on it based on the subsequent approach to repairs!) But we had a good chat on both the viewing and the purchase - I'll never forget the numberplate either because he explained he knew it was the car for him when he saw that it was 'XWM', which he said always reminded him of 'Ex Working Man'.
It was nice to be able to reassure him that I wasn't taking it away for banger racing (the car hadn't moved in 2 months so I took an enormous gamble driving it straight from Stoke to Manchester) and sent him a picture 8 months later after its next MOT.
Lovely car Ryan, well done.

The discrepancy between the date of first registration and when it went to the LEB are explained by the stamp in the service book, and what looks to be an Austin Rover 'in house' rear number plate (badge in bottom left corner).

So, I took a day off work today to set about trying to make the interior a bit more habitable. It took me nearly 2 hours to give it a bleedin' good hoover. The carpets were absolutely filthy and everywhere surface was covered in dust
After a lot of hoovering, scrubbing and polishing, the interior is once again and inviting place to be. It did come with a full set of rubber mats but you can't the luxury of proper carpet mats and it just so happened I had a brand new set all ready to go in. It's amazing how a set of mats can transform the look of an interior
Sadly by the time i'd finished it was getting dark, but it looks a million times better..
Stalks still glow too!

Congratulations on your purchase Ryan. I guess you will have enough time between now and POL to get her ready for the big reveal.
Nice to see and have all those original documents with the car, a rarity in itself.

Re: Ryan's 1987 820e (pic heavy)
I doubt I'll have time to sort the slightly crusty arch in time but i'll certainly be bringing it along as it is. It's going to be a bit of a work in progress but something I can do gradually. It will be a lovely car. Just need to get the correct wheeltrims! I think that's the thing that's bugging me the most. Apparently a mate of mine has a set at the back of his garage somewhere. Fingers crossed!
