That was the first thing I checked, I couldn't see anything obvious. I doubt it's the tappets, it's used fairly regularly and to be honest i'm not gentle with it, strangely enough it''s a car that encourages enthusiastic driving despite it's apparent lack of power, it certainly handles better than my 06' Lexus GS300, as quick as the GS is in a straight line it's like a blancmange everywhere else lol but you can't fault it's refinement and build quality.

I'd try the first two ideas then, clean the throttle body and reset the stepper motor. Maybe also reset the MEMS ECU completely by disconnecting the battery but if it's the single point injection, use that as a last resort.

Pretty sure it's not MEMS on the M series, I think they have a separate LUCAS controller for fuel and ignition and have a different reset procedure.

Good point Tom - the MPi M series i had was Lucas multipoint injection and fairly sure now you mention it, the single point was another Lucas jobby.
I was mixing it up with a Montego i had about the same time.

New spark plugs, HT leads and coil. Check the distributor cap and rotor arm and spray some WD40 on them. Those are my suggestions. Cheap to replace and they do have an age limit!

New plugs, leads and coil pack solved the idle issues on my 820.

Another thought which helped my bad idle, try a tank full of premium fuel (VPower/Ultimate/Excellium) to give the injectors a clean out or try the trick of some adding some meths to the tank to remove any water and condensation that may have built up over winter.
