Some of that does look rather squished! I'll be watching this thread closely, because I think mine has almost certainly had a knock in a similar place. Good luck.

Re: 1991 820i
The new mounting block arrived from Rimmer Bros today, so before it went dark this afternoon, I managed to remove the old, squished one from the near side of the car. The inner wing behind it is a little distorted, but nothing too serious. I needed to pack out the lower right bolt with washers when attaching the new block. The second hand bar (painted a lovely shade of silver) bolted on with no problems and I'm pleased to report that everything now sits a lot closer to those original factory tolerances than a couple of days ago!
Tomorrow's job will be to put the headlamps back in. The lower mounting for them is adjustable so if needs be I can play with that before the bumper goes back on. Hopefully I'll have enough adjustment to play with with various mountings and bolts to get the whole front end lined up something close to what it should be.

Oooooh you'll have so much "fun" putting the headlights back in Do you think it's a god awful design as well?
But back on track, nice work, great to see another one having some money and time spent on it!

Re: 1991 820i
Well, they were easy to take out! Clip in at the bottom and push the top in until the screws line up? Can't be hard can it? ...or will I regret saying that?

Re: 1991 820i
Nice looking car you've got there! My first ever 800 was an 820i (D859 SGO) and was Moonraker Blue so yours sort of brings back memories.
Nice to see you getting the spanners out and doing some work on it as well! Any plans to retro fit an early Mk2 Stone Beige leather interior at all?

I have never had a problem refitting the head lamps. Not sure what the suggestion is.

Re: 1991 820i
I had awful trouble on mine. The offside wasn't so bad, but on the drivers side there's a big lump of metal sticking out of the rad (some kind of valve?) which makes dropping the light in a 'mare. It made getting the light lined up the clip neigh on impossible...I can't even remember how I got it in now. But yes, very easy to take out...Putting back in...Took TWO cups of tea and a lot of swearing.
It was the case on mine anyway, maybe my car just hates me?

Re: 1991 820i
Well, it looks like a car again! The hardest part of getting the bumper back on was locating the side retaining clips. This required removing the front wheels and releasing the wheel arch liners so I could get my hand in. The end result is an improved appearance over the scratched, cracked and pushed in bumper I started with. It's not 100% as it would have been - I'd say it's 85% there. There is scope for further playing with the alignment, slacking things off and tightening up here and there.
So, all that remains is to attach the chrome trim, have the bumper painted and find four of the five screws that hold the number plate plinth on. Who knows where they've gone, but I cant get the front number plate back on until they turn up!

Re: 1991 820i
Nice work, well done! A suggestion for the number plate plinth - trim tape. It's surprisingly strong so may well hold it, assuming it's not "hollow" behind with just the edges touching the bumper of course?
Alternatively, how about finding the next screw up size-wise and using that? I had to do similar when i refurbished the number plate light plinth on my Sterling. I also added "reflectors" inside the number plate lamps in the form of cooking foil held on with double sided tape. You can see the results in my signature pic - the Sterling is on the left but both cars had new number plate bulbs the same day.
As the number plate plinth screws are typically hidden, would it really be a problem to use a No.6 screw instead of the factory fit self tapper?

That's the screws if you go for the factory fit ones anyway.

I dont know your location but this is on ebay at the moment and would guess that it will be bought and broken, so for you to do the same would give you a good source of parts for the future, and in the right colour too.

Re: 1991 820i
That's Danny (DLR)'s old one. Not seen him on here since the "incident" with his coupe i think it was where he sold it for peanuts and refused better offers here to start with. Or something along those lines, can't remember all the facts now but the basic thing was along those lines.

Hurrah! Number plate re-instated. Lets hope I get a prominent spot in the car park at work tomorrow so everyone can admire those sleek 800 lines!

Also got the chrome trim on the new bumper. Just to bottom half to have sprayed Caribbean Blue, but it doesn't look too bad for now. A bit reminiscent of those early base model Rover 600's with the unpainted black bumpers!
