1991 820i

Post by Austin-Rover » Tue Jan 27, 2015 2:35 pm

Introducing my new 800 - a 1991 820i saloon!

It was on eBay before Christmas and also made a couple of appearances on the Facebook Group, and not much interest was shown. I thought it would make an excellent playmate for our early Fastback, so just over a week ago I had a trip to Worcestershire to pick it up.

It's a 1991 registered car, so pretty early for an R17 as far as I can tell. (Did the chassis numbers for the 'R17' start afresh at the usual 100,001 - or did they continue from the last 'XX' chassis number?) It's finished in Caribbean Blue Pearlescent with the 'Ascot' interior in Stone Beige.

So far I've only got as far as giving the interior a good scrub and getting the wet/dry vac on the grubby seats. The exterior is untouched and requires a similar deep clean and polish. I'm very pleased with the overall condition. The inside has come up like new and I've found no horrors on the bodywork or mechanics. It's got the usual stuffed front end (remember when every one you saw was the same?) so requires work there when the weather warms up.

Now, some of you who didn't realise that 800s came in trim levels other than 'Sterling' and 'Vittesse' will be interested to learn that this car is fitted with steel wheels plus trims, manual winding rear windows, no wood veneers in the doors, manual sunroof and no air conditioning! :D It does however come with the top of the range optional R990 stereo/cassette/CD changer and an accessory dealer fit rear sun blind!

That is VERY nice.
I think you'll find there are a few "Poverty spec" afficianados on this forum who get all excited about windee up windows and blanked off non walnut trim panels 8) 8)

The colour matched steering wheel is esp yummy. 8)

An original dealer fit Rover accesory sun blind!!!!!! Cripes I'm going to need a cold shower 8)

Well done

What a cracking buy, your car was built in December 1991 and registered on the 17.12.91. Chassis numbers started afresh with R17 with the first production car starting at 100319 in oct 1991, during September 100001 to 100318 were built, these all being pre-production cars for crash testing, evaluation and journo road tests. Your chassis number is 102382 and was one of many registered by Rover with the OHP registration, possibly as a dealer demonstrator fleet or management car. The R990 Clarion head unit was standard on early Coupe and Sterling Mk2 as well as Vogue SE Rangerovers, with the CD Changer it was a £1000 option for the lesser models, so on an "i" spec car it would represent a significant percentage of the cost of the car when new. Early Mk2's are almost as rare as Mk1's now so worth any effort although it don't look like it needs much work from the pics.

Great looking early R17 as you rightly state using it's project name. No air bags neither which is a plus for any car in my opinion.

A good candidate car for POL in April when the weather is colder and wetter.

You'll have to wait a little longer than PoL for its first public showing - A.N.Other Rover already pencilled in for that one!

As for the air bag comment - I totally agree. Added bonuses also being a colour-matched steering wheel and 'proper' Rover badge in the middle!

Welcome!

Who said wheel cap's can't look chic? ;). Great condition and the ''poverty spec'' 800's are more rare nowadays than the more cherished ''exclusive'' ones.
Take care of it :D.

My first R17 was J121 HKH, now sadly long passed on. I never thought much about such things when I was running it, but now I'm older and marginally wiser I realise it must have been fairy early.

what a cracking car! look at that interior! nothing like a sea of beige lol nothing wrong with windy windows and blanked off wood, it gives the car a simple charm. And to be honest, I find the poverty spec ones a little bit more easy to live with, they have less to go wrong

Tom J121HKH was built in Feb 1992 and registered on 20.3 92 with a chassis number of WLFGAM106221, which makes it a high spec 180ps Vitesse saloon in black. Its still showing on DVLA but untaxed since 2004 so could be in a shed somewhere or scrapped and unnotified to DVLA.
Of course being this early it was pre sport( 200ps) and pre Lux (sterling levels of equipment) as these titles wouldn't appear until 1994. However this car is showing as class 5 or W in the chassis plate. Most Vitesse's of the period were based on Si levels of equipment or class 3.1 so although none of the brochures of the time mention two levels of trim they certainly existed, so can you remember the spec of J121? Its by no means unique I have many on the database so designated but it would be good to get a definitive picture of the differences.

What chassis number did Fastback production start?

Unfortunately information for Mk1 is more difficult, however F215DVR is a 2.0 litre 120ps manual Fastback in white, registered on the 1.8.88 but built in the last week of May 1988. I dont have an exact chassis start for the Fastback model but can tell you that the Fastback was introduced in May 1988 and build numbers were running at 4000 cars per month during 1988 for all derivatives. Of course, although launched in May, production would almost certainly have started in earnest in April to build up dealer stock prior to launch, having said that it would appear that the press couldn't get hold of a Fastback until late July for testing. Beyond doubt though is that you do have an early Fastback, can anyone beat 189626?

Interesting that it may still live. 2004 is when I got rid of it at auction - it had to be pushed round the sale rooms! A few days later I found it abandoned on the side of the A11. Knowing what I do now about these cars, I suspect that the fuel pump had gone but at the time I had just changed jobs and moved house, so the last thing I needed was a car with issues. But I still regret selling it.

Spec-wise it wasn't too well equipped. The usual lovely Reccaros, grey dash and walnut. No air-con, no cruise and no climate control. Leccy windows and sunroof, and not much else. If there's a specific trim item that would make it a class 5, please ask me and I'll try to remember if it had it.
Tom.

Made a start today on sorting out the crash damage at the front. I'm impressed at how easily the front bumper comes off! A very quick job. Next I took the steel bar off that runs behind the bumper - which was rather squished on the near side. There's evidence of similar damage prior to this lot I'm repairing now. The steel bar has had some rather involved repairs to straighten it out before - some rather neat welding is in evidence. Also, the mounting blocks are different. The off side one is original and painted the same colour as the car. The rather squished near side one is black and has a Rover parts sticker on it.

I've got what Rimmer Bros say is their last mounting block coming in the post along with a couple of other bits, including the steel meshing for the lower grille in the bumper. A new steel bar for behind the bumper is coming from Bradford Auto Spares tomorrow.
