I dont think that would work Dave as you say with the temps involved it also adds another risk.
Due to those weld problems and the probability of cracking this manifold is going to be temporary only, I had an idea early on it was not quite what I had in mind but had to finish it. I dont think it would be up to a track day with the stresses involved.
It will be fitted to get the car up and running if I can do something about those little tags then see what to replace it with.

This idea might work then Jim :

https://www.extrudehoneafm.com/

Not sure if there's a UK agent/operative for it but i'm sure there probably is.

This seems a possible for a UK based company doing it :

https://www.midlandsaerospace.org.uk/me ... e-hone-ltd

It could well do what you need it to do?
Cheers,
Dave

I would have thought that a turbo inlet debris net would need to be so fine that it would be quite restrictive to the airflow

You're probably right Rich, my other idea about the abrasive putty/Extrude-Hone might be a better idea to get rid of those weld tags though. Then there's no need for a filter mesh. :D

Thanks for the suggestions Dave but I am reluctant to put much more time and money into this, I will try emery cloth to remove the little tags, get it on the car and run it for a while to see how durable it is then go from there.

I can understand that Jim, perhaps save the link for the next manifold?

I used the long strip of emery cloth, dragging it through the manifold, fortunately it removed the little tags and the manifold is now fitted for testing.

Exhaust system is nearly complete, for the silencer mount I adapted one of these universal 5” clamps. I will not use the rod and nut so this is cut off.
Image

A 10mm stainless rod bent to fit the original rubber mounts with a stainless tab welded to the rod and clamp, it is fitted at the top out of sight and keeps it simple.

Fortunately the nut and rod removed from the clamp is just long enough to use for the mount before the silencer, I need to raise the rear suspension for the final position before I can tack this on. The U clamp will be removed, either welded or a round clamp.

It is only the one straight through silence at the back so volume might be an issue.

With the manifold and turbo fitted I was able to refit the hoses, fan and all the other parts removed, but when I filled the coolant one of the hoses developed a small leak, I have ordered a new hose slightly smaller diameter but wont have that till next week. I was hoping to start the car this weekend for the first time since October 2016, next week instead.

Looking good Jim! Are you removing the U clamp so the threads don't catch on the deck? Could be just as easy to turn it upside down so the nuts are at the top? Would save you more welding and/or finding a sleeve clamp.

When are your ear defenders arriving? Bet it's going to be "F-loud"!

Haha yes neighbours are going to love me.
That clamp is only temporary, if it does end up on there for a while it will be turned up the other way, just easy to get the nuts on and off like that.
The whole rear section can be removed quickly at the last V-band joint, there will be a short 90 degree section to clamp on instead to exit ahead of the rear wheel, this will have no silencers and be really unsociable.

You'll have to be really gentle on the throttle if it is loud! I take it the 90 deg bend is for track use only?

Yes but the only track it could be run with an open exhaust like that would be Santa Pod, circuits have strict noise limits these days. If I end up adding another silencer in the center section I might be able to use it on track, will see once it is running.

Opened up the M10 engine mount bolt slot to M12 and fitted the uprated O/S engine mount yesterday, a perfect fit. Any strengthening to the body will have to wait till the engine is next removed, unless it cracks of course.

Image

While working in that area I changed the adjustable cam pulley bolts to blue titanium with a larger flange head for better fit and they look nicer. The two pulley to cam bolts will be next.

Later this week, probably Saturday. Got a couple of hoses to fit and reroute, fill cooling system, hopefully no more leaks.
Plan is to run it up to temp, check exhaust and cooling system for leaks, drain engine oil, fit new oil and filter.

Its ok not just yet. I fitted the new hoses and filled the cooling system in the week, fine when I left it but after a couple of days it started leaking from the seal between the pump housing and block.
So next job is to replace the seal and most likely fit a new cam belt at the same time.
