Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Funny thing is Jim, i find TIG and soldering very similar. I'm pretty good at soldering but TIG??? Nah! The two techniques are just different enough to cause me a problem and these days my paws aren't so steady so not much good me trying!
Comes in handy for MIG and arc though as it gives just enough movement to help the bead get good penetration as well as coverage - still have the odd "that wasn't meant to happen moment" though!

Stick welding blows my mind after years of using a MIG.
I always forget to work in as you go as well as being a long way from what you're welding.
Big respect for having a go and doing a good job of it.

Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
It does help to have a steady hand, leaning on something helps a lot. My previous experience is is arc/stick welding. TIG is very clean in comparison, no smoke or fumes and no spitting or blobs of molten metal dropping into your boot for impromptu dancing mid weld.
Thanks for the encouragement.

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
No updates on the manifold due to a week in the windy west country and bit of drama changing gas supplier.
So only progress has been these rather extravagant blue titanium seat bolts and washers.
Saves about 60 grams per seat over the steel bolts! but they look nice.

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Finished welding the primaries to the flange, not the neatest but hopefully it will stay together and not crack.
Next tidied up the entry into the manifold with a burr as best I can, there is a small step in each port at the bottom edge of the new flange where it joins the Nissan flange due to difference in shape, top and sides have matched up quite well so I will accept this and leave alone rather than open it up, I am hoping it should very slightly reduce backflow of the exhaust gases at low engine speeds.
Final job in this area will be to polish it up a bit

Nice welding on the manifold Jim! Certainly better than my efforts with TIG, mine looked like an outbreak of dysentry in Trafalgar Square!
As for an accidental anti-reversionary manifold - nice bonus!

Hahaha "dysentry in Trafalgar Square"
Thanks but welding is always easier with thick gauge metal, even so I am sure an expert could point out many mistakes with it. Time will tell, a Brands Hatch track session will get it glowing red for a real test.

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
It might drop off if it gets that hot Dave. I was always surprised there was no rigid support for the manifold, turbo and exhaust to the engine other than the 5 manifold studs and nuts, seems a lot to ask of the studs and gasket with the fwd engine movement.
Thanks Phil, hope to make some more progress soon.

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
I bought this intermediate shaft from an 827 a long time ago with the intention of fitting it to the T series Vitesse to fit equal length driveshafts.
After a clean up and a coat of paint.
Anyone know if this has been done before?

Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Haven't a clue Jim if it's been done and to be honest, i don't know why Rover didn't do it in the first place! Would have made life much simpler, especially at the engine/box fitting stage in the factory!
I expect you'll have to make a bracket to mount the intermediate bearing on, whether it's better that bracket is mounted to the engine/sump or on the subframe i'm not sure and i expect a lot will be down to the practicality.
Good luck with it though, let us know how you get on!

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
Will do, the only issue I can see is the clearance for the bearing bracket to block, if there is a gap, then as you say a plate can be made fairly easily but if no gap then it will not work. I will get under there this weekend and offer it up see if it looks possible (original driveshaft is still fitted)

Re: Re: 1994 BRG Vitesse Fastback
I am waiting for a custom turbo outlet to be finished before I can go any further with the manifold so getting a few other jobs done.
One is to further modify the front engine mount for a bit more turbo clearance. It already has a big chunk cut out and reshaped for the bigger turbo on the standard manifold but I need to move the turbo over a bit more so another chunk of mount has been removed.
I used the trusty old arc welder for this job.
and finally lashings of gloss black paint
