Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
Thanks Dave!!
Right after my trip to Switzerland i finally did something that i wanted doing for a very long time. A good quality stainless steel exhaust silencer to give a better sound and better look. People who heard my car running know it sounded smoooooth but very quit. A Vitesse should sound a bit more sporty in my opinion. There are many companies in Holland that can make a stainless steel exhaust but i choose the one that was the best and two hours away.
On the lift in the hands of a mechanic with 17 years of exhaust experience.
The old damper is removed carefully because it is almost new.
Then the mechanic asks ''what kind of style would you like?'' I referred to 70's Ferrari tailpipe styling with the round pipes that are cut of at a angle. ''no problem sir follow me.''. Then i came in a storage full of tips and right away saw the ones that i liked. The mechanic took them and then he got the damper that is perfect for the car and gives a sporty sound.
The mechanic welded it all together and custom made a pipe.
That is looking very nice!
After this i made a test drive and the Vitesse was very cool sounding and loud. But i don't want a race track car so i asked the mechanic to make it more quit. He did and after that i went home. During the drive home it was all nice but close to home neer the city and its traffic i decided that it was still to loud during driving away and slow traffic. After a call to the exhaust company they said i could come back and that is is no problem at all. They made it a little more
quieter.
The mechanic asked me if he could join me with this test drive to be sure i was satisfied. I was (and still am) satisfied and the Vitesse now has a nice sporty sound without sounding cheap. The mechanic said that no extra costs are required because they want satisfied customers. Very nice people. The looks have improved as well!
In oktober i took my 827 Vitesse for the last real long drive of the year. I visited a friend and made some nice pics!
In the following days i took the Vitesse for another drive to get it nice up to temperature and then prepare him for storage.
Proper wash, drying, rubber treated with creme and the tires as well and a spray wax on the paint. Took the battery out and put the cover over him. I really enjoyed the 827 Vitesse this year as always!
During hibernation i took the chance to take care of a little job. The grill, as you know, is fixed with clips on its bottomside and fixed with screws and washers on top. My grill top fixing points were looking a bit shabby and had some minor cracks. I removed it and filled the small cracks with strong glue and re installed the grill with bigger washers on top to devide the strength better and cover one point that looked really tatty.
Filled the cracks with glue.
Also on the rear let the glue seep in.
Bigger washers.
The ones that were there...
...to be replaced by these.
Job done!
In the last week of the year 2017 i did another small but satisfying job on my 827 Vitesse. The chrome strip on top of the windscreen looked very shabby. Most of the chrome was gone and what i was left with was a yellowy strip.
When i visited POL in 2017 some 800 club members explained to me how to improve it.
First i removed the old strip. To get to it i removed the corner pieces. Some fiddles later the corner pieces were out and i could use a small flat screwdriver to push the yellowy strip from its place.
On the second picture you can probably see that the right corner cover is not looking great either so i refreshed that first. I sanded the stainless steel were i would put primer and paint. After that i masked it of.
The left corner cover was stil fine and i used it as an example.
Primer:
Satin black:
3 meters of new chrome trim that i ordered arrived. I cut of the needed length with a garden scissors.
Then i cleaned/de-greased the black strip on the car to give a clean surface for the new strip to hold on to. I removed the cover for the sticky side of the chrome strip and aliened it wit the car. After is was satisfied with the position i pressed it down like a sticker.
Also the right corner cover looks fine again!

Neat job on the windscreen trim!!
My Sterling's trim has seen better days so this might be the way to go
Got any sound clips of the new exhaust

Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
Looking forward to those youtube clips Marc!
Conrad also sell a retro-fit cruise control system, not sure if you're VDP has cruise (or your Vitesse?) or would you prefer to keep everything original as in no aftermarket accessories?

Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
@ Dave: No my 827 Vitesse does not have cruise control. Don't really mis it to be honest. And my SD1 also does not have cruise control. Maybe one day but for now i prefer my using my foot. :p
@ SJG: Thank you!
Here is a clip of the 827 Vitesse that my friend an me made a few month's ago. In real life it sounds better i think but this clip still gives an impression.

That exhaust sounds very nice Marc! You can still hear the crack/whistle/howl as it comes on song as well which is good!

Re: 1989 Rover 827 Vitesse automatic
Another little detail attended on my Rover 827 Vitesse.
The rear Rover badge looked a bit tatty. On Youtube i saw how to remove badges and emblems. I noticed the method using a fishing wire. i choose that one.
i put some tape around the old badge to prevent damage to the paintwork.
On the Youtube clips they sometimes used a industrial heat gun to soften the glue holding the badge. I choose some warm water that i used to warm up a cloth. I pressed the cloth against the badge and moved the fishing line in a sawing motion behind the old badge.
After some picking and cleaning this is what the tailgate looked like.
The new emblem was ordered at a Dutch Rover dealer. They had it new old stock! Perfect. Today, the badge arrived in style.
You feel like an archaeologist when you remove the old, yellow sticky tape.
This will look so good!
Especialy when you compare it to the one that went before.
Today i de-greased the tailgate again.
Removed the sticky side cover.
Bob is your uncle!
Before the badge, i did something that i should have done before. I removed the rear mud flaps. For some reason i did not like them. Especially when i visited my friend in Switzerland and saw his red 827 Vitesse without the mudflaps. Looks so much better! They were not screwed in or bolted to there rear bumper but clamped on. So after removal, no holes or damage. Result!
