That should ring alarm bells, the car should be listed on the Vehicle Licensing site whether it is taxed, untaxed, sorned or whatever.

You can try an HPi check but at around Â£15 or Â£20 it is quite a bit compared to the price of the car. There are cheaper ones if you Google around.

Be very careful if you buy it. If it turns out to be dodgy in away way you may NOT have legal ownership, even if you've paid for it.

Sounds like a write off or dodgy plates

However the same thing can happen where a private plate has been transferred.

Fair enough, must be a cock up by the DVLA then. One last question as I'll feel bad if it turns out to be a duffer anyway - does that HPi company guarantee their results?
The expensive checks are expensive because they guarantee the info and will compensate you if it turns out to be wrong.

I dunno? Its never been a problem before. all the cars my brother has bought weve used it. it said some gaunatee 5000 or something?

Sounds PLENTY for that car! Might be worth checking with the DVLA before hand in case you run into trouble registering it. Better they ask the current owner the awkward questions!

Yep, ring em up and say you're interested in buying this car but it isn't listed on the Vehicle Licensing website.
Ask them what the fact that its not listed means as you're thinking of buying it and you want to know if they think you'll have any problems registering it.
