I was hoping that Tickford was going to be better. I do like Nightfire on a MK1.

Looks very smart.

Hi all,

Just had this car Mot'd today, here is a pic I have just taken:

Image

Now, it actually FAILED, , but only on a rear fog lamp, :D , which was obviously easily fixed.

Advisories:Brake hose ferruls slightly corroded (surface rust spots)
Both rear tyres showing signs of slight perishing (they are the originals that were on the car when I bought it. They just refuse to wear out, despite being completely random budget things!)

Interaction between indicator and sidelight/stop lamps in o/s/r cluster. Thought this would be a wiring or connection issue, but as it turns out the car's battery was on its way out, and one new battery later, problem solved!

Other things done:

Full service
Brakes dismantled, cleaned up and reassembled. This is an annual thing for me to prevent seizure/lack of full movement etc due to low use.
Car all cleaned and waxoyled underneath, ready for winter (another annual item)
Washer jets cleaned through and repositioned
Wiper blade replaced
New Distributor Cap due centre electrode showing signs of starting to wear out, new rotor arm done while in there

Non Service items:Fitted brand new scuttle panel (thanks to Ross for supplying it). Waxoyled underside first, and fitted with care using fiddly screw seatings provided to minimise water ingress. The old one was missing its rubber strip along the top edge, and despite being included in the big restoration in 2010 was rotting again through the underside. Here it is:

Image

In addition, I have had this fitted:

Can't see what I'm on about?

How about now - spot the difference?

What we have here is a hybrid Mk1/Mk2 centre console with high armrest. Last year sometime Brad kindly laid out all his centre console bits in his garage and gave me the pick of the lot, wood trims included.

I selected a high level Mk1 centre console, together with the sloping facia and armrest cap piece (the bit aft of the handbrake) from a Mk2. This gave me the 1) padded leather armrest but more importantly 2) contains the right holes for my front window switches which, being a base model car, are fitted down by the handbrake and not on the door panel. The window switches slotted in perfectly to the position of the Mk2 power sunroof and boot/fuel filler release switches. They are basically the same switch. The pics show the heated seat switches still in place, that is, until I can source the correct blanking plates for those holes.

Brad also found me a leather trimmed handbrake handle which is also fitted.

This is a lovely little interior upgrade for me, much more significant in practise than I had imagined. The wood surround is in the peripheral vision a lot lore than anticipated and it is a really good match for the existing dash wood. The improvement to driving comfort from the high armrest is huge, making for a much more relaxing and enjoyable drive. Thanks again, Brad!!! :D

I am generally against departures from originality and mods, but this one is a real pleasure giver, and is also totally reversible. What do you all think?

Now, if I could just figure out how to get door wood trims sorted, given the manual mirrors and lack of switch packs....! Just the aircon and leather seats to go and I'd have a Mk1 820 Sterling! :D

As always, mark, your mk1 is a thing of beauty.

That turned out really well. I like it a lot.

Good news, Mark - I have just posted you some excellent (not new) window switches. ALSO, I have found some blanking plates for the redundant heated seat switches. I shall post those tomorrow.

Looks really nice Mark, I do like the mk2 centre console. I find interior modifications alot better than exterior mods, you are basically sitting in the car most of the time so its nice to able to appreciate an interior mod more than trying to convince others because you've chucked on big alloys and lowered the suspension.

I added a a padded Grey armrest in my Mk2 as well as the padded Grey doorcards which give it more of a luxurious feel, I havent had time to appreciate it due to it being parked up, but its there for when (hopefully) I get it back on the road.

Very nice. I do like the 'High' centre console. Much better piece of kit. I have removed the cassette tray from mine and have a nice big storage space now ;)

Still with me, driving very occasionally. Lives indoors in a nice ventilated space now. Still under 70k miles if I remember correctly...

Oh, and it now has leather seats :D Lovely set of early MK2 ones (ie flat panel not fluted that look like Mk1 seats did) Thanks again to Brad.

I really ought to update with pics, oughtened I?

Just noticed that the recent (well, relatively) buggeration with photobucket affected all my pics along with everyone else's, so thought I'd throw a bucket load of the most recent pics at the thread to compensate:

....and here are some more showing the (non standard) upgrade to centre console wood, which I hope you will agree is a pretty good colour and pattern match with the original dash wood trim (I do still have the original non wood trimmed parts). As well as wood trim, I managed to incorporate the rear part of the console from a Mk2 with high level leather padded armrest, fitting the poverty spec centre console mounted electric front window switches where the sunroof and boot/fuel filler switches would have been (these are still floor mounted to the right of the driver's seat):

While I do value originality, I did feel that these changes lent the car a nice upgrade in style and comfort that was consistent with what could have come out of the factory, and have made sure it is all reversible too
