rover 820 vitesse coupe btakes

hi guys bit new to forum this might sound a bit stupid but I have a 1998 820 vitesse coup low millage for age 72400 it needs its mot soon and I am thinking it needs new brake discs and pads as last time it was mot I had advise on front discs being worn want to go for some grooved and drilled discs and maybe green stuff pads front and rear .the thing is that when I go on some sites they say the size is 262 and some say 282 I know you can get carrier and caliper from 620ti (if you can find one)to upgrade to 282
so why does it say different size on some web sites . am I just being dense or is it the web sites

Welcome to the forum. :)

You're not being dense. :D On the MK1 cars the V6 and Turbo had 285 front discs. The rest had 262s.

On MK2's they were nearly all 262 from my experience though some cars did have 285s fitted.

Yours, assuming untouched from new will almost certainly have 262s.

Best bet is to measure though in all honesty. You can upgrade to 285 with the carrier as you said.

thanks Chris I did do a measure with wheel on looked like 282 but its quite hard to tell so will just have to take wheel off and take disc off and measure from back only sure to way to check . my dad had car before me and was only owned by rover before him so probably not been altered

i looked at grooved and drilled etc etc discs and green stuff pads, in the end i bought ebc standard discs, and ferodo premium pads, you will never get the benefit of the drilled ones has won't get hot enough or used hard enough and the pads will squeal like buggery, i did ask the same question last year for my 827, and i came to the ebc and ferodo conclusion as a very good upgrade over old standard tired fitment.

hi midnite I was considering getting some painted discs as don't use the car much and don't have a garage thought it might stop discs rusting when not in use they only seem to be drilled grooved or dimpled from what I have found on web.

tony do you mean the anodised gold ones, or black diamond black discs, as this is only a coating and wears off practically straight away, you will never stop brake discs rusting mate.

hi yes did mean anodised couldn't think of the word ,I know where the brake pad contacts disc it gets rubbed of but thought rest of disk would remain anodised or maybe im wrong as I have never used before just sounded a good idea .

not from ones I've seen, they anodise them to appeal to the saxo/corsa squad, the rest of it will rust the same as any other disc.

I have seen some piranha from mintec that look quite good but may just go down the budget route as may need to do other work to get through MOT .

Unless you are doing track days, you will not feel any benefit from spending extra on most performance part including brakes. Just fit the best quality standard items you can afford.

tony look on eBay, i got ebc nos brakes for cheap money, and nos ferodo premium pads for next to nothing, these actually are an upgrade over any old rubbish that been fitted to yours in the past, my car is a 2 owner 89k looked after car, and its still fitted with local motorfactor rubbish over the years.

be careful on eBay though, as new discs are available for little money, these are unbranded tat.

You should be able to tell by looking at the dust shield behind the disc.

If the shield is the same size as the disc you have 285s, if the shield is bigger than the disc you have 262s.

I think you'll probably find the fronts are 262mm Tony unless a previous owner has "upgraded" them to 285s (or 282 if you prefer) as Rover dropped the 285 discs on the Mk2 for some reason.
One reason suggested to me some years back by an ex-Rover Master Tech (his description) was that there were too many warranty returns on them. Apparently the discs, despite being venitlated, weren't wide enough to dissipate the extra heat from the 285 discs under heavy braking and had a tendency to warp.

hi guys thanks for the advice the heat shield is definitely bigger than the disc so must be 262mm .decided to just put through MOT today and only failed on one tyre so had two fitted and tracked /balanced so that was a result not really surprising as only done 1100 miles since last MOT. On the subject of MOT I pay my tax by direct debit but got no reminder of MOT either from garage or DVLA do you think that the car would be unable to be towed for having no MOT even if I have been paying for the tax.
not like old days when you had to take insurance ,MOT and registration to get re-taxed.
