Can't help with new ones but I have some second hnad ones. I'm sure you could get a seal kit and get a set sort of refurbed?mjc9967 wrote:I'm not aware of any rattle - is it audible while driving?
About the sliders, yes its with the concertina boots, some have let in water and the slider pins got pitted.
Not saying it can't happen but I've never heard it. Always been pad fitment in my experience.whitelion58 wrote:very audible, especially on the pot holes round here... Gets really irritating... Hard to be certain if its the pads or play in the sliders really.

Thanks Chris I'll hold out fo r anew kit or see how they look next service.
Cleaned up the rear wheels yesterday, they were well caked in rusty brake dust from the three days driving with the lumpy brakes. Didnt get to the fronts as I was busting my fingers doing the nooks and crannies by hand, and they just have normal dirt. The rears took a lot of elbow grease (1.5hours each one) and I will only use warm soapy water, no harsh chems.
Anyway, just had a 70mile spin this afternoon, normal damp roads throwing up light spray etc, ran my finger over the rear wheels and the salty road residue from that drive is stuck to them quite badly. The fronts still wipe off dirt with a gentle glide of the finger from the polishing I gave them after the refurb. I guess the rust dust etc ate into the polish on the rears. I will have to redo them - that'll give me quite a backache!
I guess its a good job they had the polish protection in the first place or the rusty dust would've got closer to the paint finish.

When my 827 coupe had the wrong pads in they rattled like mad and it seemed like the play was all in the sliders. Fitting the correct pads took out all the play. I think it had 285mm calipers with the pads from a 262 or vice versa.whitelion58 wrote:very audible, especially on the pot holes round here... Gets really irritating... Been out washing the green Sterling today, tomorrow is my second battle with the volcano dust!
Anyway, some pictures for you to enjoy:
Finally managed to clean the wheels, first time in a while. They are going to need taking off for a deep clean and re-polish/wax soon! I think the 16"-ers would suit her very well...

It looks like the car is new! I wish my panels were flat and straight like that.
By the way, are you really seeing any volcano dust?

Yep if you look at the red Mk1 in the background of the first two pics you may be able to see the light coating on it. It was washed just before the whole volcano thing started and hasnt been driven since.
If I run my finger along it I get tiny black particles with a few shiny bits in it!
As a precaution I am using the hose to loosen anything I can before washing, then doing a gentle sponge wipe/wash, before doing the normal heavier microfibre mit wash. Dont want any of those bits scratching the paint up!!!

Well, its been a while, finally having long periods without incident on the green goddess.
Jumped in, fired her up, no aircon, just a hissing sound from the vents and hardly any oomph in terms of cold air. 22 degrees outside, so would have been nice, but not critical for the day.
My journey happened to take me past my faithful garage, so popped in for a word. Compressor kicking in and response to control panel selections all normal, so went for a regas, its first ever. 650g of freon, 5g each of dye and oil, and 27mins later, fully regassed and working as it should. It was down to 470g of freon which my meachanic predicted when he first thought the regas was needed. He was kind enough to have me in there while he did it and gave me a rather nice lesson on the machine he was using and the process in general, so I saw all the needles etc.
No leaks found, vacuum held perfectly for the allotted time (27mins), apparently these things just go down over time, bit like the need to put a bit more water in your central heating loop from time to time. Thermometer stuck in the vent showed output down to a chilly 5deg for a good 10mins afterwards. Hope this isnt the start of a need to regas every couple of years...
We like the simple fixes!

At least it wasn't more serious.
They do say in a lot places that you should expect to top it up every few years.
