Benny's back in a Vitesse!

Post by BennyVitesse » Sun Dec 11, 2016 10:25 pm

Its been a few years since I last owned an 800, the V reg 827 SLi automatic once owned by Brad and converted to a MK1 style front end. In the meantime I've owned a few other Rovers and a few left field choices such as an Omega 2.2 petrol (utter rubbish) MK2 Chrysler Neon (surprisingly good) Fiat Coupe 20v (too swift!) and a Fiat Bravo 1.4T (boringly modern).

For some time now I've wanted to get another 800 and had casually mentioned to friends that I'd like something that was a runner with some MOT and not needing major reconstuctive surgery! Lets just say such cars are thin on the ground, we're either seeing total rotjobs or concours cars, and some rotjobs priced as concours!!

I was offered an 820i Fastback which I had to turn down because whilst it was mechanically good it needed a lot of paintwork restoration (it was originally red!) and this was beyond my basic skills. Its still for sale, at a very keen price, so contact Sam Skelton or Alex Singleton if you're interested!

I then stumbled across this car for sale on Ebay at the other end of town. I actually lost out in the auction to a last minute sniper who, surprise surprise, never completed his purchase!

Its a very late example, registered by Telford dealer, Charles Clark, on 28th April 2000 and then sold 3 days later to the vendor who chose it over a new 75 simply because he'd owned 2 other Vitesse 800s before and preferred that over the more retro and less sporty 75.

It does need a little bit of TLC around the front wings and a dent in the rear door as well as the usual dash lift! I'm also after some buttons for the R960 as they have fallen off and a Vitesse gearknob if there are any left!

More pics to follow once I've got her home!

Well done Ben - when do you pick it up?

As an aside, i use a snipe tool a lot for my ebay purchases and have always completed the deal, there's millions more the same as me but look at the snipe user that didn't complete as having done you a favour. :D

Trouble is, no matter which barrel you look in, you'll find a rotten apple, doesn't matter what colour skin, country of origin, religion or any other discriminating factor you choose to use as a selector, there will still be that rotten apple. On the upside, there are plenty of good ones!
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave

I'm hoping to collect it next weekend as I'm working all week sadly.

I am pleased to hear of an honourable sniper, unfortunately I seem to get issues whenever I sell on there involving a last minute bidder!

and yes I fully appreciate the karma of the situation, the runner up won for a change!

Glad you've got one you're happy with.

Out of curiosity what's made you hanker after another one?

I missed having one! Always found them to be big and comfy to drive and in Vitesse form, impressively quick.

As I intend to move the Bravo on next year it may even be temporarily promoted to daily duties. The plan is then to obtain something smoky for day to day use and fix up all the little jobs that need doing on the Vitesse.

By vitesse gear knob, I take it you mean leather covered?

These are still available, but seriously pricey. If yours is damaged, peel off the leather and you have a nice moulded plastic one underneath.

If you must have a leather one, have a search for Range-Rover manual gearknobs from the same era as the 800. Same design, but a few quid cheaper than 800 ones. At least that's what I found during my own research a few years ago.

Yes, the leather is peeling itself away so for the time being the moulded plastic one will do.

Good shout about Range Rover parts will look at those too.
Thanks.

I think sometimes a car can get into your bloodstream and when you've owned a fair number of them I imagine people do wonder if you'll go back to them!

Well done that man
I'm presently putting the finishing touches on a Vitesse Fastback my nephew bought from Matt (midnite).
Needed a fair bit of welding but that's all behind me now.
Big thanks to Matt for the extra bits and bobs.

Do I see a Dubble-Yew Reg there???

V Jealous!

When I picked up my V reg back in '04, as I drove away from the selling garage, pleased as punch to have the latest reg letter of any 800, literally on the same road I saw my one and only W reg 800 passing in the opposite direction. Doh!
