Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
The replacement ECU made matters worse then Andy?
In that case i'd refit the original and check the sensor isn't dirty behind the cam pulley, if cleaning it doesn't improve things then a replacement sensor.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
The replacement ECU behaves identically to the old one, no change regards to 9 flashes.
I've ordered a compression tester and new plugs so we'll go from there, all part of the fun!
Just need to find where i "safely" stored my spare crank sensor!!

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
It's not firing on all 6 at all then? Does it sound tappety/clattery? What's the oil like, both level and condition?
Might be worth adding a litre of synthetic ATF to the engine oil, run it up and see if things improve. Also an engine flush and oil/filter change with 0.5L of synth ATF added to the fresh oil to continue cleaning/reviving oil seals/sorting the hydraulic tappets.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
Not firing on 1, 2 and 5, not tried it today though. The oil level is at max and looks ok, (something i always check along with the cam-belt condition before attempting to start it )
I might add some atf to the oil but i did give it a nice "seamfoam" alternative which all helps
It's not overly tappety not enough on warm up to think there's an issue.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
You didn't accidentally rearrange the HT leads when you changed the dizzy did you?
I honestly doubt you have but might pay to double-check - firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6, #1 rear bank, timing belt end, #4 front bank, timing belt end but i'm sure you know that anyway.
If it was misfiring in the first place then it could be down to the PGM-Fi blanking some firing signals to minimise back fires because of the duff sensor (if it is duff) but i'm inclined to think it's probably more down to lack of use/oil/tappets.
Tis a puzzly one!

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
I've double checked the leads, but i pulled the dizzy off and transferred over one by one. Plus when pulling a plug it would effect the running, it doesn't, nothing happens.
The Rovor runs fine with the crank sensor un plugged it just throws a code, so it should run without misfiring.
I'll know more when the compression tester turns up, saves me swapping injectors.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
What about just unplugging the injectors one by one to see if the fault gets worse, changes etc?
Could be corrosion on the inside of the dizzy cap on the segments/contacts, especially if it hasn't been used for a while.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
I can hear the spark jump out of the end of the lead whenever i pull a lead off a spark plug, so i know the spark is good. It's also the 827sli dizzy on there at the moment.
Injectors will be my next step once i've done a compression test as a compression test is quicker than swapping injectors if it's a compression issue.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
I meant just unplug the electrical connector on the injectors Andy. That said it probably wouldn't achieve much other than confirming those pots aren't firing.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
Compression low on a few cylinders, but not enough to cause the misfire, so i swapped injectors 1,2 and 5 and it fired up smoothly

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
All good news Andy! Had a hunch it might have been the injectors, hence the suggestion of unplugging each in turn to see if it made any difference.
You're probably way ahead of me now but how about fitting a new fuel filter and running some injector cleaner through it?
Also have you reset the ECU (pull fuse "S" for 30 secs or more) and rechecked for the Crank Sensor fault? That might also be clear now as well.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
The battery never stays connected when I leave it over night but the code still returns..
There's a lot more to do it , I might start a new thread when I'm done

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
Well done Andy. I’m so glad the cars getting the TLC it deserves. I may even pop out your way for an evenings drive over the next few months.
Spent a productive morning fault finding the ABS system on my Vitesse Coupe, one replacement front sensor later and it’s all good. Also needed to swap out a rear brake calliper that’s got a little lazy and failed the mot on. All parts from that Blue 820 Dave.
