I know longer own a Sterling I sold it today.. But it's gone to a great home
I now have an 827 manual vitesse - project

Already pulled the radiator, slam panel, airbox and battery tray out and checked the cambelt by removing the front cover.

Yeah, looked at it one day and the next it's on my driveway with the Sterling on the trailer for the return journey!!scoobyh123 wrote: ↑Sun May 13, 2018 8:52 amCrikey Andy, that was a bit unexpected!

The Sterling had lacquer peel in a couple of places where the previous owner stuck tape over the gaps to possibly keep water out!!?? The tape was long gone before i bought it but the damage has been done, shame as the rest of the paint is pretty good! Otherwise it would have been worth top dollar. But i do this for a hobby not for the money
The Sterling's low mileage, drove great but the tax ran out end of April and I do so little miles in it and what with the advent of the ROVOR . If it hadn't sold yesterday it would have sat unused, i may have even put it up for sale at some point.
Here's the Vitesse in all it's glory.
I've been hard at it today, (it's now on four axle stands) among other things i've drained the fuel through and added some new, but it's trying to start but gives 9 flashes, is this definitely the crank sensor behind the front camshaft sprocket?
It's certainly cat approved

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
Talk about quick decisions! Looks nice though!
Nine flashes does indeed relate to the Crank Angle Sensor behind the front cam pulley. However..............
it may not be the sensor itself that's gone belly up. Check the PGM-Fi ECU carefully for signs of water ingress, i still have one in the shed that shows up the same fault from time to time. I can reset it by pulling fuse "S" for a few minutes and it'll be fine for a short while then throw up the PGM-Fi light on the dash.
I've yet to try a repair which will be cleaning it with IPA and a toothbrush but fairly confident that will fix it. If yours is the same, check the sunroof drains - i've now found a permanent cure for leaky sunroof drains as well!

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
Cheers Dave!
I have a spare ECU, so will swap it out.
The funny thing is, i pulled the plug for the crank sensor and after cranking it over i got 4 flashes, plugged it back in after cranking it again, it gives 9 flashes.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
Good luck with the ECU swap Andy - certainly easier than changing the crank angle sensor!
Interesting result about the 4 flashes and then 9 depending whether the sensor was plugged in or not. I have a theory as to why but let's see what the ECU swap brings first!
If push comes to shove i think Kev Clark has some sensors at a "sensor-ble" price (do you like what i did there? ), not sure if he's advertising them on fleabay or not at the moment but fairly certain to forum members they're cheaper than what he's got them on the bay for.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
I have a spare crank angle sensor that works (SLI engine from the ROVOR), i've heard it can be changed without removing the belt but it might be easier not to push my luck and do it properly.
I should try the theory out on my ROVOR, infact brb.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
To be honest Andy, having seen where it is i'd say it was almost impossible to remove without removing the cam pulley which means removing the belt.
However, if you can undo the bolts, one at a time, turning the engine for access to the other bolt, you may just about be able to firkle it out. Might also find it's just dirty, like ABS sensors sometimes get.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
I unplugged the ROVOR's crank sensor and it starts but flashes 4 times, i have changed over the whole dizzy so i know it's not that.
I'll try the ECU tomorrow!

At least that's consistent with the other one and the 4 flashes. be interesting to see if the ECU makes a difference.

Hi Andy.
Glad the Vitesse has gone to an enthusiast. Likewise I’m sure with your Sterling. I really didn’t expect to drive back from your place with another car, in fact as I left mine with the Vitesse on the trailer I stopped and said to Sophie something like “that’s one less” . Silly boy eh, but bless her she’s cool with the whole car thing.
Wed/thurs I’m doing the head gasket on the O series 820 so it’s busy busy for a while.

Re: MK1 827 Sterling G reg
Swapped that ECU in but it didn't change the outcome, the engine did eventually start though with the help of mr easy start, guess being sat for so long didn't help, not running on all 6 though.
Jez, much appreciated for dropping off the Vitesse and relieving me of the Sterling, i was beginning to run out of space
I needed a new project to play with
